Microsoft Extends Warranty for 'E74' XBox 360 Console Failures 250°
April 14, 2009 // 4:40 pm - Microsoft has investigated the 'E74' issue on the XBox 360 and has recently concluded that they will cover repairs related to the error.

This will be included in the three year warranty program that was put into place in 2007 for general hardware failures.

To quote: While the majority of XBox 360 owners continue to have a great experience with their console, we are aware that a very small percentage of our customers have reported receiving an error that displays "E74" on their screen.

After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message...

Launch Day XBox 360s No Longer Under Three-Year Warranty 200°
February 1, 2009 // 9:34 pm - An anonymous e-mail hit the tips line earlier today and after placing a call with Microsoft's technical support, we can confirm that starting February 2, all launch day Xbox 360s will no longer be covered by Microsoft's three-year extended warranty.

The warranty should have technically ended at the end of September last year, as I was told by the technical support agent.

If you're unfortunate enough to own a launch version of the Xbox 360 and need to send it in for repairs after February 2, you'll have two options available to you. You can either call Xbox's...

VISA extended warranty protection replaces dusty PS3 50°
January 17, 2008 // 3:22 pm - A huge fuss was recently kicked up regarding a certain PS3 that was too dusty for Sony to repair.

However, it seems as if the gamer has been saved by his VISA card's extended warranty protection which should see his system replaced.

To quote: I just got off the phone with Visa for the third time and they are sending me a claim form to start the repair/replacement process of my system.

They at first said that they would need to attempt to have it repaired in my local video game repair shop, but I let them know that i had already contacted them and the firmware...

Is This PlayStation 3 Too Dusty To Be Repaired Under Warranty? 50°
November 14, 2007 // 7:26 pm - We now have pictures of the Playstation 3 that Sony refused to repair under warranty because the unit was too dusty.

Sony originally claimed that the pictures would not be released without a subpoena, and that the dust presented a threat to their technician's health that could only be alleviated if our tipster paid $150.

After our posts, Sony abruptly reversed course and released the pictures to our tipster. Sony's letter, the pictures, and our poll below:

Thank you for contacting us regarding our Warranty policy as it pertains to the condition of your...

Sony CSR: What? No! Dust Doesn't Void Your PS3 Warranty! 50°
November 11, 2007 // 5:25 pm - Sony CSR admitted to reader Ive that dust should not void a Playstation 3's warranty. Transcript and audio, after the jump.

Ive: I'm calling just to pretty much clarify the PS3's warranty, if there's any clause in the warranty that makes it so that if the PS3 is too dusty that the warranty is void.

CSR: No.

Ive: No?

CSR: No. The only way that it, um, voided is if it was neglected, um, abused, dropped or anything like, modificated like if you opened it up, modification, if you didn't have your receipt, um, any power failures like mother nature...

Sony Denies Surge Protector Voided PS3 Warranty 50°
October 17, 2007 // 2:21 pm - This post in the PlayStation forums claims that Sony Customer Service told the owner of a bricked PS3 that plugging his console into a surge protector had voided his warranty, and that he'd have to pay $150 to have the unit repaired.

This sounded pretty unlikely to us, so we contacted Sony and were told that, no, plugging your PS3 into a surge protector does not void your warranty. Duh. Ok, they didn't actually say "Duh," but it was clearly implied.

Sony will be contacting...

Using a surge protector voids PS3 warranty?! 50°
October 16, 2007 // 2:49 pm - According to Danjak on the official PS boards: So I woke up yesterday morning and saw that my PS3 was not on. You know that little light letting you know it's getting power? That morning, no light. This happened once before, but I was able to unplug it and plug it back in to get power, and then it worked. I tried that yesterday morning, but nada. Nothing would work... it was completely dead and not getting power.

So I call Sony and let them know that my less-than 4 month old PS3 was now a brick. I tried to tell the guy that the trouble started when I first tried to play Call...
