Sony Refuses to Replace Backwards-Compatible PS3 Consoles 750°
April 15, 2009 // 9:27 pm - A TAWKN (linked above) user who goes by dn2500f has had his 80GB PS3 with backwards-compatibility at Sony's repair center in Ontario, Canada for three weeks now.

Sony apparently only offered to give him a new model 80GB PS3, which does not include PS2 support (over 1,900 PS2 games that he can no longer play).

To quote: Today he called in to get a status update and was told that it was beyond repair, and because Sony doesn't make that model anymore they can't replace it... despite the fact that he bought four years' worth of Sony Care extended warranty for it,...

PS3 80GB Dropping to $400 in September, Will Replace 40GB 100°
July 15, 2008 // 8:05 pm - Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton announced today that the price point of the 80GB PS3 model will permanently drop to $400 dollars this September, replacing the current 40GB pack.

Tretton stressed that the new 80GB Core Pack will become Sony's primary PS3 model, offering "all of the same features and functionality" of the 40GB.

Does that mean no backwards compatibility with PS2 games?

To quote: No new SKU was announced, and the 40 GB SKU will be phased out, so it seems that Sony is likely moving back to a one-version console...
