Speculation: The Wii price cut? 200°
April 30, 2008 // 10:23 pm - It is looking more and more like Nintendo may have no option to make the Wii cheaper at retail, despite what Satoru Iwata says. Here's why:

It has been at the same price for a long time now, during which it has become a lot cheaper to make. Especially with the volumes they are churning out. And they were making a profit in every unit from the beginning. So there is plenty of room to drop the price.

They are ramping up production to 25 million units a year. Initially these will just meet the backlog of demand but once that is done they will need to use the price...

Four Cops buy GTA IV while news and Police Union condemn it 100°
April 30, 2008 // 1:49 pm - KBC ran a story today in which it looked at whether GTA IV could spur violence against real cops. Eugene Blagmond, of the Fraternal Order of Police, claimed the game will desensitize people to the real mayhem that's going on out on the streets and said that the glorification of killing of any police officer is just wrong.

However, the report also noted that 4 police officers went to purchase the game in the space of just one hour while they were filming at a retailer.

To quote: It's jammed full of sex, drugs, and lots of blood-soaked violence, and it's flying off...

Nintendo's next console will be the best one yet! 50°
April 29, 2008 // 12:21 pm - A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, gamers had an interactive game for their TVs called pong. The game was hailed by computer enthusiasts all over the United States. Soon after pong came what older gamers would remember as Atari which allowed gamers to play many different kinds of games on one console.

But as great as these games were, video games were seen as nerdy and a "fad" that would die out within a year or so. In 1985 a Japanese company called Nintendo decided that it wanted to bring video games to the "casual gamer" and delivered to the world the NES.

April 28, 2008 // 2:15 pm - Grand Theft Auto IV is one day away from release, and already Jack Thompson has begun to step up his war on the title. The embattled Florida attorney has written a letter to the US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, R. Alexander Acosta, demanding that legal action be taken against Take Two and retailers for selling the game. This time, Thompson appears to have an unlikely ally thanks to video gaming news site IGN.

Thompson sent a copy of the letter to Ars Technica, and his demands are far-reaching. "Indictments should be returned against Take Two corporately and...

SEGA Dreamcast: Ahead of its Time 100°
April 27, 2008 // 4:28 pm - In March 2001 the dream was over. A little more than eighteen months after its European launch, Sega discontinued its final console and retreated from the gaming hardware wars for good. Despite a strong launch and a line-up of great and innovative games, the Dreamcast couldn't stand up to the onslaught of Sony's all-powerful PlayStation 2. A project that had started out with high hopes and a real vision for the future of gaming now felt like another console failure.

Look at the numbers, and that verdict still stands. Dreamcast never achieved the sales or won the third-party software...

Rural Albert Lea man accused of video game scam 50°
April 27, 2008 // 12:04 am - During a nearly one-year period, Frank Buchanan allegedly made about 192 purchases on two credit cards at various stores.

What was out of the ordinary, however, was that the 30-year-old Buchanan also allegedly had about 183 refunds on those cards.

The rural Albert Lea man's transaction history, authorities say, demonstrated an obvious purchase-return pattern mainly involving video games at multiple stores in numerous southeastern Minnesota and northern Iowa cities, including Austin and Rochester, according to a criminal complaint filed this week in Mower District...
