GameSpy: PS3 is definitely beating 360 in some areas of online

342w ago - It used to be the console war was a question of getting out the sliderule and measuring comparative polygon thoroughput. Now, however, gamers - and even developers - are much more likely to try to measure the relative performance of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo by the online features their consoles offer.

Few have as good a viewpoint on that particular battle as Todd Northcutt, GameSpy's director of technology. Thanks to the company's position as the exclusive online partner for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, as well as its middleware licensing agreements with Sony and Microsoft, Northcutt works closely with each manufacturer.

"I don't think you've seen the same pace of innovation from Microsoft as you have from Sony recently," he told Develop in a pre-E3 briefing. "It's been steadily improving the PlayStation 3 as an online gaming device and an entertainment device while the Xbox 360 has had its half yearly updates but there's nothing groundbreaking that's been released, other than a couple of changes to the marketplace."

"We have a really good relationship with Sony and it's great to see the evolution of the platform.

I think it's experienced a lot of evolution and in some places PlayStation 3 is definitely beating out Xbox."

Yoshida: Team Ico Has Something Really, Really Good on the Way

343w ago - The new head of Sony Computer Entertainment Shuhei Yoshida said, in an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine, that Team Ico has something "really, really good on the way."

The full quote: "They are working on a title. I started the ICO project. Ueda-san joined my team in Japan as a cinematic animator, but he created a short movie and presented it to me and said, "I want to make this game."

I said, "Yes, let's do it, but you have never made a game. We have to have experienced people do it," so it took a while, recruiting one person at a time. And because Fumito Ueda doesn't compromise, we had to move the development from PSone to PlayStation 2. Then I couldn't complete the game because I moved to the United States.

It took four years and the second game took four years too. So I started calling them the 'Olympic Team.' They haven't released a PS3 title yet - of course not - they'll take four years! But they have something really, really good on the way."

Of course Yoshida would say something like that-he kind of has to. But given the track record of Team Ico-I think we can take his word on that.
 

PlayStation UK Site Confirms Some Games Coming to US and EU

- Eternal Sonata (NBG)

Does this confirm that games such as Battle Fantasia and Eternal Sonata are at least coming to Europe (and hopefully the US)? There are some interesting unannounced games in there as well.
 

Anime Expo: David Hayter Critical of Some MGS Moments

347w ago - Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter was surprisingly candid at Anime Expo's centerpiece guest-of-honor panel, where he admitted to being frustrated at times with Metal Gear Solid series director Hideo Kojima's over-the-top scriptwriting and direction.

He specifically called out the suicide scene highlighted in Metal Gear Solid 4 trailers, saying that Snake, a man who's killed thousands, shouldn't flinch at pulling the trigger on himself.

"I didn't agree with that at all, and I begged them to change it, but I think it's still in the final game," he said. "I didn't buy it at all. I think it's weak for Snake to be killing other people and then not be able to kill himself when it's time. If he knows it's time, then it's time."

Hayter also revealed that wasn't the first time he's had issues with MGS scripts -- and one of the culprits should come as no surprise to longtime series fans. "It's a delicate thing to discuss love blooming on the battlefield with Otacon," he admitted, describing the original Metal Gear Solid's notorious unintentionally homoerotic cut-scene. Hayter also revealed that the actors "had a tough time" getting through the alternate ending of MGS, where Snake and Otacon are seen riding off into the sunset on a snowmobile.

Warhawk to support Trophy System, some Retroactive

347w ago - Dylan Jobe has confirmed that the team is excited about integrating trophies into Warhawk for new awards as well as some awards that players may have achieved before the update.

In addition to this, Jobe commented that some but not all of the trophies in Warhawk will be retroactive.

To quote: We contacted Dylan Jobe, producer/director at Incog. Inc., to find out exactly what was going on with the Trophy scheme and got the following statement from him: "We're excited about integrating Trophies into Warhawk for both new awards as well as some awards that players may have already achieved (prior to the update) like rank, combat badges and medals.

As a result of our approach, and to clarify some of the confusion on the Net, some - not all - of the Trophies in Warhawk will be retroactive."
