Media Molecule Addresses LBP Sales, Sequels & IP Infringement 50°
December 26, 2008 // 8:19 pm - The Little Big Planet team addressed some of the biggest little issues facing the game in an interview with IGN, from copyright infringement to talk of a sequel. Despite reportedly slow sales, Media Molecule is optimistic about their numbers so far.

"There's all these different reasons that you could be disappointed with the sales and look at it that way, or you can say we kept pace with the Fallouts, etc," said Media Molecule's Alex Evans. "Every other game that we were keeping pace with was a third or fourth iteration,...

December 21, 2008 // 9:40 pm - As predicted, the Blu-ray format experienced excellent holiday sales during the past few weeks. One of the hottest ticket items were Blu-ray players. Consumers have spent over $60 million on Blu-ray titles last week, representing 14 percent of the total home media market.

Reports from the Home Media Magazine, state that Blu-ray sales experienced a dramatic increase of 167 percent. This increase is mainly due to the release of The Dark Knight.

There were several other successful movies such as Wall-E and Wanted. Wall-E followed...

LittleBigPlanet and Valkyria Chronicles PS3 Sales Disappoint 50°
December 16, 2008 // 9:13 pm - Couple of sad stories for you today, PS3 owners. One involving a cute little title that should never have been thrust into the limelight as a system seller. The other, a gorgeous tactical RPG.

Let's start with LittleBigPlanet, then. Media Molecule's quirky, original platformer was always going to be a struggle to sell to the holiday masses, what with it being an original IP that involved neither rock music nor guns. But even Sony's most pessimistic sales teams wouldn't have been prepared for this.

The game sold an OK-ish 205,000 units in October, but wasn't out for that...

Sony's PlayStation 3 is a Sinking Ship as Sales Plummet 300°
December 12, 2008 // 8:54 pm - Alone among the three major videogame consoles, sales of the PS3 are down about 19% from November 2007, according to the latest stats from the NPD Group. Sony was only able to sell 378,000 PS3s this November, compared to 466,000 last year.

And the problem for Sony isn't the recession, it's the PS3. Microsoft (MSFT) put up respectable numbers with its Xbox 360, selling 836,000 units vs 777,000 in November 2007. And Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii continues to dominate the market, more than doubling sales from 981,000 to 2.04 million.

So why is the PS3 flopping so badly?

Square Enix Sales Down 74 Percent, Wait for Dissidia on PSP! 100°
December 7, 2008 // 8:45 pm - In a recent study, it was unveiled that this year Square Enix's sales were down by 74%. This was partly because the bulk of Crisis Core's Japanese sales came in 2007, but it still performed well when it was released in other regions earlier this year.

The main reason for Square Enix's lacklustre sales this year is the absence of any other strong titles, which is where Dissidia: Final Fantasy comes in.

Since it was initially announced, Dissidia has intrigued...

Americas Sales for the Week Ending November 29, 2008 50°
December 5, 2008 // 3:36 am - Black Friday sales for the video game industry were excellent. Nintendo sold 1.8m systems for the week ending November 29 while machines from rivals Microsoft and Sony combined to sell about 1.1m units.

Software sales were quite strong as well, but the vast majority of the spike this week is simply from the fact that Americans spent $10 billion ($30/per American if every American shopped) on Black Friday according to various reports, and a lot of that went to video games.

Last year, Black Friday week sales were strong as well, but Wii, DS, and Xbox 360 saw significantly...

Atari Speaks on Second-Hand Video Game Sales and the Industry 200°
December 3, 2008 // 10:54 pm - Various video game publishers have spoke out recently to either condone or criticize second-hand video game sales for eating into their profits.

Atari president Phil Harrison isn't worried though, as he says their future strategy is to make games that people will want to keep hold of stating: "it's no coincidence that the most valuable games, the one's that have the most lifetime as a game experience, are the one's that don't get resold, that don't get traded.

PS3 Sales Stagnate; Nintendo DS, PSP, XBox 360, Wii All Going Up 50°
November 27, 2008 // 9:49 pm - The PlayStation 3 and PS2 were the only platforms that didn't receive a significant boost this week as the end-of-year climb finally begins.

The DS and PSP platforms are both up nearly 20k units, the 360 almost doubled last week's effort from 8k to 15.5k, and the Wii is up 10k units from the previous week.

Defying the weekly gains for every other platform, the PS3 sold only 17.4k units this week, exactly (for our purposes) what it sold last week. As we look for continued increases in hardware next week, will the PS3 be along for the ride?
