ID: Programmers will tell you the PS3 is a pain to work with

ID: Programmers will tell you the PS3 is a pain to work with 50°
338w ago - Tim Willits and Todd Hollensead of ID recently spoke to GameInformer regarding their latest focus - RAGE. Hollensead has revealed that the first thing his PS3 programmers will say is that essentially it is a pain to work with.

However, he revealed that while there are challenges to it, it's certainly "not as hairy" as people originally said it was.

To quote from the Interview:

Q: Have you found developers for the PS3?

Hollensead: I think the programmers will tell you first that it's a pain in the ass to work with. They have said that it's a pain in the ass to work with, but at the same time, that's our job–making games–and the strategy that we wanted was to have a game that worked on all the platforms.

John, to his credit, came up with a technology solution that allowed us to do something unique, which is to have one source base for the media, not source for programming source, art source. Once you solve that problem, then the dominos start to tumble about multiplatform and crossplatform simultaneous development.

Yeah, the PS3 is kind of the one that the programmers cherish the least about going, "OK, there's a problem with the PS3, let's go find this." But at the same time, one of the things that we find is that when...

PAIN Patch Adds Trophies and Game Content, if you Pay for it!

PAIN Patch Adds Trophies and Game Content, if you Pay for it! 50°
338w ago - The long-awaited PAIN trophy patch is now available to download. Simply load up the game and you will be prompted to download the 325MB patch. Don't forget, PAIN's trophies have been retooled, to make them a bit easier than originally intended. The patch also adds a bunch of content to the game -- but only if you pay for it.

Three new characters are available to purchase, along with the new "Abusement Park" (though none of these are available on any region's PSN Store as of yet). There are also new game modes which, we assume, come with the Amusement Park expansion.

There is one free addition to the feature roster, however. Each week a new mini-level will be made available. Each of these "PAINlabs" will be an experimental concept that Idol Minds are playing with and are releasing for you, the players, to test out.

An interesting idea -- and best of all? It's free. Though, having said that, we doubt anyone would pay any money for these, judging from the first one.

PAIN Trophies coming in September!

PAIN Trophies coming in September! 50°
343w ago - Posted by Travis Williams (Sr. Producer, SCEA) today:

Hello everyone it's Travis Williams, PAIN Producer, again and I wanted to take some time to tell you about the new PlayStation Network Trophies being added to PAIN Downtown.

The last trophy I ever "earned" was in ROTC. That was way back in High School (tragic I know). So, I have been really excited to see PlayStation 3 trophies make their way into games both old and new. It's a new way to show your "ePump-a-tude". PAIN already features internal trophies that make the modes challenging.

That's why it's so awesome to get to make a whole new set of trophies. Here's a list of some of the Trophies you will see next month. If the names seem sophomoric or juvenile to you, then you clearly haven't been playing PAIN enough. That's kinda "How We Do."

To answer some questions before they come up...

Q: When will Trophies be available for PAIN?
A: When the Amusement Park ships on 9-4-2008 we will update PAIN to include trophies.

Q: When does Amusement Park ship?
A: Duh

Q: Are Trophies retroactive?
A: Most of the trophy requirements are new so we haven't tracked your progress until now. Some work you will get credit for.

Q: Are you CRAZY?!

PAIN 'Amusement Park' tidbits revealed; video on Monday

PAIN 'Amusement Park' tidbits revealed; video on Monday 250°
348w ago - Nestled deep in the comments section of the official PAIN Blog, Producer Travis Williams has been busy responding to the community. There's plenty of back-and-forth banter, but there are also some hidden gems of info which we thought you might be interested in.

PAIN's expansion pack, the Amusement Park, will be available this Summer for "less than $6.99" and a video of it in action will be shown on the official PlayStation Blog at some point tomorrow. A European release will happen simultaneously.

With regards to trophies, this will be included in the expansion pack and won't end there. Travis says that "new trophies for PAIN will come out as long as we continue to add content."

Hopefully this is a common occurrence, with future game expansions for existing titles bringing more trophies. Could this mean more Super Stardust HD trophies are coming at some point in the future? Considering there's no Platinum trophy, we're guessing so.
