Sony, Microsoft discuss Blu-ray for Xbox 360 350°
March 6, 2008 // 10:21 pm - Sony is in talks with console rival Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360, according to a senior executive.

The Japanese electronics maker has until now touted Blu-ray as an advantage its PlayStation 3 holds over Microsoft's console. Microsoft has backed Toshiba's HD-DVD format and offered an HD-DVD drive that can be plugged into the 360.

But after Sony's victory last month in the high-definition DVD format war, Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics US president, said the two sides were now talking about Microsoft adopting Blu-ray.

US Air Force Wants 300 40gb PS3s 500°
March 4, 2008 // 8:54 pm - It looks like the United States Air Force needs some heavy research machinery at a low cost. Who do they turn to? The PlayStation 3, 300 of them to be exact.

The Air Force Research Laboratory is conducting a technology assessment of certain cell processors.

The processors in the Sony PlayStation 3 are the only brand on the market that utilizes the specific cell processor characteristics needed for this program at an acceptable cost.

At this moment it is only a Request for Proposal, in which sellers will provide price quotes to the Air Force.

March 2, 2008 // 9:50 pm - Many were astounded by how well GeForce 9600GT performed in the first reviews. Even though the number of shader processors were reduced to 64, it was breathing down the neck of the much better equipped 8800GT.

Many reviews have used factory-overclocked cards, simply because many partners decided to launch overclocked cards, instead of going with NVIDIA's reference of 650MHz. However there have been some oddities, and in some cases, GeForce 9600GT has performed extremely well, even at the reference frequency.

IBM has designed it from scratch to increase data center efficiency, and reduce power, cooling and space requirements. While sporting performance which is on par with what a cluster of 1,500 x86 processors, it requires 85% less power and 85% less space to operate. If you want more, z10 can scale up to hundreds or even hundreds of thousands of users, IBM says.
