Intel Unveils Graphics Chip Line 50°
356w ago - As the article goes.. Intel has unveiled details of the chip that will spearhead its move into computer graphics. It has revealed blueprints for the Larrabee chip that is scheduled to first appear in finished products in late 2009 or early 2010. Larrabee will be a stand-alone graphics processor unlike the onboard chips it produces for many PC makers.

The move will bring Intel into direct competition with graphics specialists Nvidia and the ATI division of AMD. Intel is aiming to put Larrabee into graphics cards for PCs that help show games and video in very high detail. Like existing...

Nvidia Chipsets are now History! 50°
356w ago - There are a ton of 'rumors' floating around about Nvidia giving up the ghost on its ailing chipset division. Nvidia is desperately trying to deny it, but don't believe the spin, the division is deader than an Nvidia mobile GPU.

Just over a week ago, Nvidia's maximum leader, Jen-Hsun Huang, held a meeting with Taiwanese mobo partners. He directly asked them if there was a reason why Nvidia should stay in the chipset business. You could hear the crickets chirp.

In mainland China. No one came up with a reason, so the division was officially killed, and the teams will be...

DVD Access Library with no Mod-chip Required 50°
357w ago - Marcan writes: While Nintendo did reply to bushing's open letter, he has not succeeded in establishing a conversation with an engineer about the issue. Furthermore, we have learned that they received and read at least two of the original three e-mails that were sent prior to the open letter, and decided not to reply (in fact, one of their replies was to one of the original e-mails, but only after the open letter was posted). Therefore, we can only conclude that they are not very interested in the issue.

As many of you may already know or have deduced, the bug in our open letter...

PS3 Graphics Chip Shrinks to 65nm this Fall 100°
362w ago - Kotaku are reporting that as part of Sony's "cost down efforts," the PlayStation 3 will be getting smaller, cooler, cheaper, more efficient 65nm RSX graphics chips starting this fall.

Kaz Harai noted in his corporate strategy speech earlier today that the Cell processor has been manufactured with 65nm process technology as of "last holiday."

Both were originally manufactured at 90nm, which was charming at first, but now seems rather vulgar. We're updating our console power consumption charts in anticipation of the new RSX's release.

More RV770 and RV770X2 Chip details! 50°
369w ago - ATI said a few things about its new upcoming RV770 chips, and as we've said before you can expect RV770PRO with DDR3, RV770XT with DDR5 support and the top end, R700 aka (RV770X2) with two RV770XT chips in a dual-card configuration.

The new GPUs are 55nm and they are actually an architecture shrink chip with minor architectural changes. Of course, just as RV670, they do support DirectX 10.1 and at the same time, they will bring some significant performance improvements compared to the previous RV670 generation.

The new RV770 chip will also have great improvements in power...

Chip maker AMD still in the red 50°
372w ago - Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices has reported its sixth quarterly loss in a row as it continues to lose market share to its rival Intel.

AMD lost $358m (£180m) between January and March, even though sales were up 22% on the same period a year ago. The firm had warned recently that sales were weak across all product lines.

AMD's fortunes are in stark contrast with that of Intel and other tech companies, which have reported robust earnings in recent weeks. The company recently announced that it would cut 10% of its global work force, with a loss of about 1,600 jobs....

Silicon chips stretch into shape 50°
374w ago - Normally fragile and brittle silicon chips have been made to bend and fold, paving the way for a new generation of flexible electronic devices.

The stretchy circuits could be used to build advanced brain implants, health monitors or smart clothing.

The complex devices consist of concertina-like folds of ultra-thin silicon bonded to sheets of rubber.

Writing in the journal Science, the US researchers say the chip's performance is similar to conventional electronics.

"Silicon microelectronics has been a spectacularly successful technology that...

GaryOPA graces PSX with 12F629 mod-chip port! 50°
380w ago - After 10 years of the original modchip design for the PSX machines which used the older PIC 12C508, we came across a bunch of un-modded new PS-One machines, and since we had the old source code for the PSX mod-chip, and the original design used the PIC 12C508 chip, which is hard or costly to get these days, and there is tons of the newer 12F629 chips around these days due to the Wii-mod.

We decided to release to the world, our quick and dirty recode of the old Classic 4-wire mod for the PSX using the 12C508 which was originally coded by the famous Old Crow (Scott Rider), and updated...
