What if: Apple designed a handheld gaming system?

What if: Apple designed a handheld gaming system? 650°
368w ago - Earlier this week it was revealed that Apple has filed to extend their trademark protection to include "toys, games and playthings, namely, hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games [and] stand alone video game machines".

While this does seem like a clear sign that Apple is planning to develop and release some form of video game console, a trademark filing does not positively ensure that such a device will become a reality. Companies do this sort of thing all the time, extending their reach to include products and services that they may never actually produce, but want to stake a claim to, just in case.

Here, however, there is some strong evidence to suggest that Apple might be planning to develop a stand-alone handheld gaming device. In previous What If columns, we examined what some other companies' offerings might look like, if they were actually built. Today, we speculate on the features that would likely be included in an Apple handheld, in light of this intriguing news.

Overall Look and Feel

Given Apple's emphasis on design, any handheld system they released would have to look beautiful as well as play games. The company has followed a broad, mass-market stretegy with their previous devices, and they would probably want...

Lost Planet for PS3 requires 5GB Installation

Lost Planet for PS3 requires 5GB Installation 50°
368w ago - Capcom was kind enough to send us a pre-release copy of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition for our PlayStation 3. Surprisingly, just like Devil May Cry 4, Capcom also requires a 5GB installation that can take up to 15-20 minutes.

Only this time, there isn't much to read on-screen, and it's pretty much pointless to sit in front of the TV watching it install so very slowly.

While we are confident that the 5GB installation is worth it, will this be a Capcom requirement for all of their PS3 titles? Perhaps.

A rather 'large' Smash Bros Brawl glitch

A rather 'large' Smash Bros Brawl glitch 50°
368w ago - Given everything else in Smash Bros Brawl has been revealed on the internet, it's only fitting that a few unintentional quirks are spoiled, too. While you might argue/joke "that's not a bug, it's a feature," we're pretty sure this one is a bug. Here's your spoiler warning -- video (and explanation of the glitch) embedded after the break.

Normally, Jigglypuff's final smash has him turn into a giant puff and push people off the stage, subsequently returning to normal size. Using the collapsed bridge, someone found a way to keep him permanently enlarged. You don't have to sit through the entire video, only the first minute or so is important.

Video can be seen below:

Blizzard Explains Why ‘StarCraft Ghost’ Wasn’t On The DICE Canceled Games List

Blizzard Explains Why ‘StarCraft Ghost’ Wasn’t On The DICE Canceled Games List 50°
368w ago - Did you hear about that list of canceled games Pearce, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime, and company lead designer Rob Pardo presented at DICE? A list of games they said they started making but never finished? This list, snapped as a photo by Kotaku.

I had some questions for Pearce about it, including why "StarCraft Ghost" wasn't on it. But first, I asked, which of the game on the list came closest to release?

Pearce: "WarCraft Adventures" was the one that came closest to release. But even so, if we had decided to complete "WarCraft Adventures" we would probably would have had 12 months more of work on it, to polish and get it right.

Some of them were only in their infancy when we decided it was not the right thing. And some of them were further along. I know that for "Pax Imperia" there were a number of people and marketing resources that had been put toward picking a box and stuff like that.

Multiplayer: What about "Games People Play"? That didn't sound like a Blizzard game.

Pearce: That's why we didn't end up doing it. The concept was ,like, casual games. Whatever we can put in there. Card games. Public domain casual games. And it didn't fit who we were.... That was a long time ago. That was before the first "Warcraft."
