GameStop Promotion: Trade in a PS2, Get $100 off a PS3

GameStop Promotion: Trade in a PS2, Get $100 off a PS3 400°
306w ago - Don't have a PS3 yet? GameStop has a very good promotion right now, allowing you to save $100 off the purchase of a 80GB PS3 system when you trade in your PS2 and three games, as follows:

To get the credit, your system must include AV cables, power cable and a working DualShock 2 controller. Most PS2 games will be eligible for the promo, but they must be worth at least $2 in trade value, meaning your old copy of Madden '04 will definitely not work.

Considering the cost of a new PS2 is now $100, this is quite possibly the best deal you'll be able to get on selling your old and busted system.

With Uncharted 2, MAG, Heavy Rain and a number of PS3 exclusives in the pipeline, now might be the time to jump in... unless you're waiting for that still-elusive price drop.

PS3 Firmware 2.70 Update Locks Up with PS2 Adapters?!

PS3 Firmware 2.70 Update Locks Up with PS2 Adapters?! 400°
309w ago - According to AltPlusF4.com (linked above), PS3 Firmware 2.70 is causing bricked systems. However, they are not bricked, just 'locked up' primarily due to certain brands of PS2 to PS3 USB adapters being plugged into the system.

So for now, simply do not use these adapters on the new firmware.

To quote: The PS3's 2.70 firmware is causing some havoc out there with reports of bricked systems. They're not bricked, do not reformat.

If you have certain brands of PS2 to PS3 USB adapters plugged into the system on boot you'll get a blank screen, no sound and won't be able to connect your controller (adapter controller AND PS3 wireless controllers).

If you get the firmware update installed fine and then plug in your adapter, you'll lock the system up and have to do a hard reset. The only solution to this issue right now is simple - unplug the adapter and don't use it for now.

We know of two adapters currently (there are likely more) that are causing faux-bricks: TAC and Sumoto.

This is affecting quite a few people that use older controllers/instruments for game such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band so you can bet they'll make enough noise for Sony to hear them. With any luck, it will be a simple fix that they can get out fast to users.

Analysts: Sony PS2 Price Cut Signals PS3 Price Drop This Year

Analysts: Sony PS2 Price Cut Signals PS3 Price Drop This Year 350°
309w ago - Now that it's in a price-cutting mood, analysts tracking Sony Corp. (SNE) say the company is more likely than ever before to lower the price of its flagship PlayStation 3 videogame system sometime this year.

To quote: Sony's computer entertainment division announced Tuesday it will lower the price of its PlayStation 2 console to $99.99. The PS2 was released in 2000.

Sony hopes the 23% price cut, which takes effect Wednesday, will sustain the life of the PS2, which it says has sold more than 136 million units worldwide since its launch.

Critics contend Sony now needs to lower its PS3 prices for a number of reasons, starting with staying competitive with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), which saw sales of its Xbox 360 jump after lowering the price and bundling the system with games in early September.

PS3 price-cut pressure increased in December, when analysts said Sony might not reach its goal of selling 10 million PS3 consoles through March without a price reduction, as sales for the hardware dropped despite gains by competitors. March videogame console sales results won't be available for another two weeks, a Sony spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the company is in the midst of...
