The Worst Things EA could do to GTA 50°
April 18, 2008 // 3:58 pm - Not long ago gamers everywhere were put into a state of panic when everyone's favorite analyst, Michael Patcher, suggested that if EA were to acquire Take 2 it would be in their best interests to delay GTA IV.

While gamers were able to get through the first delay of GTA IV given the slew of holiday titles to blissfully pass the time with, a delay through the summer draught of gaming would leave a very dry taste of fear in our mouths. Of course since GTA's release is so close a delay is comfortably impossible, as the title has already gone gold, but if EA were to get control...

Sony: Microsoft right about downloadable media predictions 50°
April 11, 2008 // 10:48 pm - Well here's one that is sure to cause quite a debate. While speaking at an ELSPA press conference recently, Sony Computer Entertainment UK's Ray Maguire offered his insight on where he sees the direction of gaming media going, saying that within the next 10 years 90% of game sales will be online.

Maguire elaborated on his beliefs, saying: "We have a situation that if you're a retailer you're currently responsible for the goods that come through your chain," he continues "But that's not true with ISPs in the future.

This is something that Apple did with its many Apple retail stores around the world. Microsoft will put its retail people in the shops with hope that these skilled people will be able to show the true Microsoft experience.

Sony lacks manufacturing capacity to meet Blu-ray demand? 50°
April 8, 2008 // 6:42 pm - Despite Blu-ray's utterly devastating victory earlier this year, Sony may be in a spot of trouble. Seems the company has a bit of a problem manufacturing the discs (I swear I've heard that before), and since it's the the biggest producer of The Blu (that's how cool kids say Blu-ray), it could be the biggest obstacle to the format's success.

Not that that really matters, since in five years we'll have a new format. Demand for The Blu is expected to JUMP this year to 48 million units; Sony only has the capacity to manufacture 38 million, and that's after an upgrade to its facilities....

April 7, 2008 // 8:38 pm - Federal industry minister Jim Prentice says he is looking into complaints from the United Kingdom that Canada unfairly subsidizes its thriving video-game industry - but, he suggests, the gaming industry's success is largely due to its ingenuity and innovation.

"We have innovative Canadian companies that do great work, that are cutting edge and I hope they will continue to exactly that, compete with the best in the world," Mr. Prentice said Friday in response to a question after a speech to the Harvard Law Association in Toronto.

The U.K.'s ministry of culture,...

Coming soon: Superfast Internet 50°
April 6, 2008 // 4:37 pm - The Internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.

At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, "the grid" will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.

The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with...
