Bionic Start-Up Developing for Wii 50°
May 1, 2008 // 1:11 am - Bionic Games is a new development studio based in North Hollywood actively recruiting team members to work on an unannounced action adventure game for the Wii. The game will be an original IP, and a few minor details can be gleaned from the company's job listings.

Bionic is looking for a Lead Animator to oversee, among other things, "high quality pre-rendered cinematics." The game is a third-person adventure.

Apparently, Bionic has picked up a former Obsidian employee named Mike Stout to serve as its Creative Director. Stout was Lead Level Designer at Obsidian, presumably...

Microsoft helps police crack PCs via USB device 50°
May 1, 2008 // 1:10 am - We're all for the end of evil things like child pornography and terrorism on the Internet. But news that Microsoft's latest piece of hardware allows the police to quickly break through a PC's security to scan through the hard drive has to be described as a little Orwellian.

The USB device can be plugged into a PC and used to break through password and decrypt protected files, allowing the police to do quick on-site scans of suspects' computers for insidious files, conversations and emails.

Speculation: The Wii price cut? 200°
May 1, 2008 // 12:23 am - It is looking more and more like Nintendo may have no option to make the Wii cheaper at retail, despite what Satoru Iwata says. Here's why:

It has been at the same price for a long time now, during which it has become a lot cheaper to make. Especially with the volumes they are churning out. And they were making a profit in every unit from the beginning. So there is plenty of room to drop the price.

They are ramping up production to 25 million units a year. Initially these will just meet the backlog of demand but once that is done they will need to use the price...

SEGA Dreamcast: Ahead of its Time 100°
April 27, 2008 // 6:28 pm - In March 2001 the dream was over. A little more than eighteen months after its European launch, Sega discontinued its final console and retreated from the gaming hardware wars for good. Despite a strong launch and a line-up of great and innovative games, the Dreamcast couldn't stand up to the onslaught of Sony's all-powerful PlayStation 2. A project that had started out with high hopes and a real vision for the future of gaming now felt like another console failure.

Look at the numbers, and that verdict still stands. Dreamcast never achieved the sales or won the third-party software...

April 27, 2008 // 2:04 am - During a nearly one-year period, Frank Buchanan allegedly made about 192 purchases on two credit cards at various stores.

What was out of the ordinary, however, was that the 30-year-old Buchanan also allegedly had about 183 refunds on those cards.

The rural Albert Lea man's transaction history, authorities say, demonstrated an obvious purchase-return pattern mainly involving video games at multiple stores in numerous southeastern Minnesota and northern Iowa cities, including Austin and Rochester, according to a criminal complaint filed this week in Mower District...
