Uncrackable Lock found, the end for future hackers? 300°
August 5, 2008 // 7:08 pm - Reports are circulating that a quantum cryptographic chip that uses light particles to encrypt data during electronic transfer could throw off hackers once and for all.

To quote: Imagine an encrypted data chip so secure that even the greatest hackers in history would find impossible to crack. That chip is very much a reality thanks to the combined efforts of Siemens, Austrian Research Centers (ARC) and Graz University of Technology who have teamed up to create the first quantum cryptology chip for commercial use to ensure securer electronic communication.

Burnout Paradise Getting Retroactive Trophies in Future Update 50°
July 1, 2008 // 6:02 pm - In a post on the official PlayStation Blog linked above, Criterion Games designer Simon Phillips confirmed that Burnout Paradise will support PS3's upcoming achievement-like trophy system in a future update after Cagney hits on July 10.

Reassuringly, Phillips clarified that trophy support in Paradise will indeed be retroactive, due to the fact that saves for the title are locked specifically to a single PSN ID.

Any progress you've made in the game will be reflected in your trophy list as soon as the update goes live.

To quote: We're about to...

The Shady Future of PSP - It's Always Darkest Just Before Dawn 50°
June 13, 2008 // 11:38 pm - Takeru Kobayashi is no giant. According to Wikipedia, he's just another day at the office for the average measuring tape, coming in at only 5 ft. 8 in. tall. Neither does the scale fear his presence, as he weighs a fairly muscular 191 lbs.

If you saw this man out for a stroll among the hustle and bustle of the streets, would you believe he could wolf down 63 hot dogs in 12 minutes? Would you believe he won Nathan's (no relation) Hot Dog Eating Contest six years in a row? Of course not. You'd never expect him to be the...

A One-Console Future: Pray it Never Happens! 50°
May 11, 2008 // 3:25 am - Competition becomes even more vital in an industry that is technology driven. It's quite amazing that Moore's law, which states that computing power doubles every 18 months, still holds true.

This rapid evolution is primarily driven by competition. People are constantly trying to outdo each other. Consoles typically have a shelf life of about five to six years. What would happen without competition?

Where did the Genesis go? What happened with the PlayStation 2? Having nightmares yet?

In other words, we would potentially skip a whole generation of hardware....

Blu-ray: The Future Has Been Delayed 50°
May 1, 2008 // 1:15 am - Hot on the heels of last week's report from ABI Research noting that many consumers may not see the picture quality difference between Blu-ray and standard DVDs comes the latest Blu-ray sales figures from NPD Group. And they're not pretty.

According to NPD, sales of Blu-ray standalone players plummeted 40 percent from January to February, then rose a scant 2 percent from February to March. The general consensus was that once Toshiba dropped its support for the HD DVD format early this year, sales would increase.

In fact, sales of Blu-ray standalone players remain so...

Danger for the X-Box 720 and PS4 50°
April 16, 2008 // 1:00 am - It's a computer, not a console - Kutaragi on the PS3.

What makes a games machine?

It's a simple enough question, but the answer is something that has long eluded consensus. For some, a "games machine" is something made by Nintendo, or something with "PlayStation" or "Xbox" written on the packaging. For others, it's all about the amount of RAM, and the speed of the CPU, and the number of GPU cores they've managed to shoe-horn into their LED-encrusted black-and-silver beauty.

For years now - decades - these two points of view have...

Sony: Microsoft right about downloadable media predictions 50°
April 11, 2008 // 10:48 pm - Well here's one that is sure to cause quite a debate. While speaking at an ELSPA press conference recently, Sony Computer Entertainment UK's Ray Maguire offered his insight on where he sees the direction of gaming media going, saying that within the next 10 years 90% of game sales will be online.

Maguire elaborated on his beliefs, saying: "We have a situation that if you're a retailer you're currently responsible for the goods that come through your chain," he continues "But that's not true with ISPs in the future.

This isn't merely a games industry...
