Capcom Working on Project Natal Game Based on Old Franchise

Capcom Working on Project Natal Game Based on Old Franchise 50°
268w ago - According to Capcom's VP of strategic planning and business development Christian Svensson, Capcom is working on a hardcore Project Natal game based on an old franchise.

Outside of tech demonstrations and modifications of several existing Xbox 360 games, we haven't seen what Project Natal is capable of.

Microsoft is keeping those games under wraps, however, G4TV caught up with him at CES last week and learned the following, to quote:

"I can't talk about what we're doing on Natal right now yet because we haven't announced it, although we have announced that we're working on stuff," said Svensson, emphasizing his vagueness.

He was willing to tease a little more about one unannounced game, however.

"I think you'll see again a brand focus on what we're doing there [on Natal], perhaps a brand we haven't seen in a while," he said with a coy smile, as Capcom public relations eyeballed us. "That's exciting."

Microsoft announced Project Natal would be released during the holidays at CES, but Svensson made it clear to me that Capcom was not rushing this one out the door to meet that deadline.

"We're not going to be at launch, just to temper the expectations," he said. "We're gonna cook something and it's gonna to take a while to cook."

QPACE Supercomputer with PS3-based Processor Tops Green List

QPACE Supercomputer with PS3-based Processor Tops Green List 400°
275w ago - QPACE, the supercomputer at Research Center Jülich and the University of Wuppertal, is now deemed the world's most energy efficient supercomputer on the Green500 List.

The Green500 List ranks the energy efficiency of supercomputers around the world.

To quote: "The QPACEs Intel PowerXCell processors are an enhancement of the Cell/B.E. processor, originally developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM for Sony's PlayStation 3 console.

QPACE (Quantum chromodynamics Parallel Computing on the Cell) is being used to simulate forces in elementary particle physics, especially in the research area of quantum chromodynamics, which describes such things as how a proton is made up out of quarks and gluons.

It consists of four racks at Research Center Jülich and four at the University of Wuppertal. Each of the QPACE installations has a top performance of 100 TeraFlops, equal to 100 trillion floating point operations per second. The supercomputer runs a standard Fedora Linux distro OS.

Each rack in QPACE contains 256 IBM PowerXCell 8i nine-core processors and 1 Terabyte storage, and uses 30 kilowatts of power."

Toshiba is Set to Detail Its Cell-based TV in Early October

Toshiba is Set to Detail Its Cell-based TV in Early October 400°
283w ago - According to PCWorld (linked above), Toshiba will soon unveil its first television based on the Cell processor, the same multimedia chip that sits at the heart of the PlayStation 3 games console.

Toshiba has been showing prototypes of the television and Cell technology for the last couple of years and its unveiling on Oct. 5 will come just before its first public showing at the upcoming Ceatec electronics show.

While a launch date has not yet been announced, the timing of the unveiling suggests it should be on sale in Japan before the end of this year.

To quote: "The Cell chip was developed by Toshiba, IBM and Sony and each chip contains a single Power PC core and eight co-processors. Together the chips make heavy-duty processing of video a breeze.

During previous demonstrations of Cell TV prototypes, Toshiba has put the chip to use providing real-time upscaling of standard definition to a quality closer to that of high definition.

It has also been shown streaming multiple chapters from a recorded TV show to make navigating to a desired part of a program easy. It's similar to the multiscreen menus on some DVDs.

But for all the neat tricks it can do with video there's one thing it almost certainly won't do: run PlayStation 3 games. Toshiba has said several...

Rumor: PS3 Slim Discovered in Micromania Database Listing?!

Rumor: PS3 Slim Discovered in Micromania Database Listing?! 300°
290w ago - As if we didn't need more confirmation that the PS3 Slim exists and is coming soon, French site Total-Manga.com (linked above) is reporting news of a screenshot from retailer Micromania's product database today.

To quote from Kotaku on the rumor, as follows: "That shot, hosted by Total Manga and via NeoGAF's marathon thread of PS3 Slim speculation, could be easily faked. But the details are inline with recent chatter about the mythical console redesign's leaks.

Micromania supposedly listed a September 1 arrival date and a €299 price point. That's cheaper than the current €399 model, which has been the target of retailer price drops over the past few weeks."

The picture (below) caption reads as follows, roughly translated: "Here is a photo showing that the PlayStation 3 Slim is just a matter of weeks before being a reality!"

310w ago - Sony Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein shared the following video today via PS Blog:

Today marks the 3rd and final day of our GDC PlayStation.Blog.Lounge, and we're very happy to welcome Q-Games President Dylan Cuthbert into the fold.

Chances are you've already already played one of his company's titles, PixelJunk Eden, Monsters, or Racers (and read about the upcoming Eden Encore).

But who are the people that make such innovative games? And why don't they wear shoes when they work?
