New Sony PlayStation 3 and PSN Releases for October 1st, 2013

50°
74w ago - Sony Social Media Specialist Ryan Clements is here with the new PlayStation 3 and PSN releases for October 1st, 2013 below.

To quote: Journey through a haunting city soaked in rain, or blaze across the courts with a cheering crowd in your ear - this week greets a number of thrilling new releases joining the PlayStation family.

In Rain, gamers will explore the streets, alleys, and awnings of a haunting city saturated by rain. As an invisible boy, players must use the rain around them to perceive their small hero running through the world, pursuing a similarly ghostly girl, while avoiding a malevolent force. Rain blends this adventure together with unique puzzles to create a wholly original experience.

But if you'd rather go hard and go loud, perhaps NBA 2K14 will be your preferred game for the week. The next entry in the long-running series, NBA 2K14 aims to bring you the best basketball you can find in gaming. Witness the return of the multiplayer Crew mode, the inclusion of Euroleague, a dynamic living roster, and a killer soundtrack.

PlayStation will also enjoy the arrival of another PS2 classic in the form of Fatal Frame III: The Tormented. Prepare to sleep with the lights on.

For a full list of games launching this week, check below, and enjoy The Drop.

Sony PlayStation Plus Content Updates October 2013 Preview

100°
74w ago - Sony Senior Community Specialist Kristine Steimer is here with the PlayStation Plus October 2013 content preview updates below.

To quote: I'm a sucker for fantasy. If a game allows it, I'll create an elf mage because magic is awesome. This month I can do just that as Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is entering the Instant Game Collection. With a tale crafted by NY Times best-selling author R.A. Salvatore, stunning visuals from Todd McFarlane, and a customizable combat system, Reckoning has a lot to offer RPG fans.

The mix-and-match combat means I can get my magic fix while also smashing things in the face with a hammer, or stabbing them with a sword and other various pointy weapons, which is pretty cool if you ask me.

You may remember that last month we added Team Ico's original cult classic ICO to the IGC, so their equally beloved sequel Shadow of the Colossus seemed like a natural follow-up. Slaying the majestic Colossi should make you feel something (read: incredibly guilty), but hey, you gotta save your #1 girl, right? In a completely different vein, Plus members will also receive Poker Night 2, which is an amusing twist on the classic card game.

With GLaDOS as the dealer and opponents like Claptrap from Borderlands and Ash from Army of Darkness you can sit back, have...

Sony Introduces Mighty No. 9 for PlayStation 3, Details Available

50°
74w ago - 8-4 Ltd Executive Director Mark MacDonald introduced Mighty No. 9 for PlayStation 3 today with details below.

To quote: What are you gonna be doing come Spring of 2015? No plans yet? Well here's one appointment to put on your calendar a bit early: Mighty No. 9!

Mighty No. 9 is an all-new Japanese side-scrolling action game coming to the PlayStation 3 (and maybe PS4 and even Vita! But more on that later...) that harkens back to the best aspects of the old 8- and 16-bit classics many of us grew up with, only evolved and transformed into something only possible today.

As the titular hero (known as Beck), you'll need to run, jump, and blast your way through your fellow Mighty Number robots, stealing their powers to fuel your unique skill to transform your body into new shapes for added abilities!

Maybe your limbs could become giant magnets, enabling you to walk up walls or rip away enemy shields... Or maybe extendible spring-loaded hands would let you to activate far-away switches or work as a grappling hook...

Or a tank-like body might let you easily cross over spikes or push objects around the levels... These are just a few possibilities we're considering (the game is still in the design phase), but you get the idea!

You might know Mighty No. 9's...

Sony PlayStation 4 Audio Processor (ACP) PS4 Details Surface

200°
74w ago - Following up on the previous PS4 updates, today details on the PlayStation 4 Audio Processor (ACP) have surfaced from Sony documention.

To quote (via VGLeaks.com, linked above): "Mark Cerny confirmed in an interview that PlayStation 4 uses hardware expressly dedicated to audio tasks. What are the capabilities of this hardware? What is Sony telling to developers about it?

Here we have some material from Sony’s presentations where you can learn more about audio custom hardware in PS4. This dedicated hardware will manage basic tasks, for game or system, relying on the CPU or GPU for advanced tasks.

Another important point is that this audio block is not programmable by developers directly, they could only access it via OS."

PS4 Audio Processor (ACP)

  • Custom Audio Block
  • Access mediated by OS
  • Not programmable by game teams
  • Performs encoding and decoding
  • Game: 200+ MP3 or equivalent streams
  • System: Encoding and decoding for voice chat, etc...
  • Filtering and effects performed by game code
  • Presumably CPU, but GPGPU is also a possibility
