Debunking the Myth that the X-Box 360 is dead

50°
352w ago - Daily GameFunk analyzes the 360's prospects for the immediate and long-term future. With the 360 being surpassed by the Wii in North America, and the Playstation 3 in Europe, the article seeks to answer the question: Is the 360 dead? And if not, what can Microsoft do to keep the 360 viable against strong competition?

In terms of sales, the 360 has been struggling to gain its footing on very slippery slope this year. After being the leading console in the US for more than 2 years, it was finally surpassed by the Wii at the end of May.

In addition to this, Sony announced a few weeks ago that they had finally outsold the 360 in Europe, landing another critical blow to the 360. With this on top of numerous other issues, many have began contemplating whether or not Microsoft has already closed up shop on the 360 and began looking at future consoles. However, this is simply not the case.

Microsoft has lost the advantage of having the largest install base in North America. However, while having the largest install base is important, developers often look towards a console's attach rate(the average number of games sold per console) as well.

After all, while having 25 million potential customers is better then having 18 million potential customers, if the 25 million only average 4 games...

Sony's This Is Living "talking urinals" Video available

50°
352w ago - Sony surprised attendees at a recent PlayStation event with talking urinals. The plastic gizmos gave out the following message: "Mate, when the urinal starts talking to you, it's time to call a taxi! Or dance on the bar! Woohoo! This is living!"

To quote: The toilet facilities at the recent PlayStation soiree held in Auckland held a sinister secret. With the harmless-looking plastic objects sporting the "This is living" slogan, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was safe to relieve yourself; until it starts talking.

"Mate, when the urinal starts talking to you, it's time to call a taxi! Or dance on the bar! Woohoo! This is living!"

Experiencing this firsthand was disconcerting enough to reverse the immediate reason for visiting, and creepy enough to encourage me to seek refuge in a cubicle. Kudos to the sick, mad genius in Sony's marketing crew who came up with this one.

PlayStation Portable Still King in Slow Sales

50°
353w ago - Another week has gone by, which means we should take another look at the situation of hardware and software sales in Japan. Research firm Media Create has again posted the numbers for the week that ended on May 23 and we'll be serving up a bit of analysis alongside the figures.

Both hardware and software sales registered a drop in the analyzed interval, but the latter suffered much more than gaming consoles in terms of sales. The PlayStation Portable seems to have an iron grip on the first spot in sales, with a bit over 70,000 consoles sold, which registered as both a win and as a loss, because it sold over 19,000 units less than in the previous week.

The Nintendo Wii dropped even more, somewhere around 41,000 thousand, with over 25,000 units less than in the previous week, but it made it on second place, while the DS came in third, with a smaller drop than any of the top three consoles and sales of around 35,000 units.

The PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 2 from Sony have almost equal sales, of 7,701 for the first console and 7,022 for its last generation cousin. They both sold more than the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, which only managed to move 1,298 units during last week.

The week will be remembered as the moment when the Nintendo Wii managed to cross the 6 million sales barrier,...

Microsoft: Blu-ray not taking off

100°
353w ago - Once again, Microsoft has squashed rumors that a Blu-ray drive for a refreshed Xbox 360 may be in the works. The company believes that DVD will remain the more important optical format at this time and that the real format battle may be fought online.

An article published by Home Media Magazine earlier this week quoted Shane Kim, head of Microsoft Games Studios, saying that while Blu-ray "provides some visual boost for people who want a physical HD format", Microsoft does not see "that format taking off, in general." Consequently, Kim stated that Microsoft is not working on "any type of Blu-ray disc add-on for the Xbox 360."

These quotes somewhat contradict a steady stream of rumors coming out of Taiwan, suggesting that a Blu-ray Xbox 360 is set for a September launch. However, according to Kim, the DVD format is still going strong and offers a better value proposition in an Xbox 360 that sells for substantially less than the Playstation 3 at this time.

Home Media Magazine indicated that Microsoft may put much stronger focus on its Live platform than on thinking a new optical drive. Kim told the publication that the "digital distribution business is one of the reasons Microsoft is so keenly focused on Sony, and not Nintendo" in this current state of the console battle....

Sony Taking Action Against Phony Uncharted Airsoft Gun

50°
353w ago - Sony Computer Entertainment is none too thrilled over the fact that online retailer King of Swords is selling an unofficial replica of the Beretta M92F gun featured in PlayStation 3 title Uncharted.

According to a company spokesperson, they will be taking "appropriate" measures against the Web site very soon:

The Drake's Gun is not licensed or in any way sanctioned by SCE and one we certainly do not condone.

We are investigating the source of this product and will proceed with the most appropriate action.

It's worth pointing out that this same retailer is also selling a number of unlicensed swords from the Final Fantasy series.
