Project Artemis - PS2 Hacking System in Development

Project Artemis - PS2 Hacking System in Development 400°
342w ago - For some time now (several years, off and on), GSHI administrative staff and several select members of the scene have been working, in secret, on something tentatively called Project Artemis: a hacking system for the Playstation 2. Details, and the original thread, can be found linked above, or here.

The project is far from complete. There have been quite a few stumbling blocks, and some impressive progress has been made (though, without consent from its authors, not all of it can be shown here immediately - an issue I'm hoping will be resolved in the next few days). Through several primary coders (Sang123, Hit n' Run Games, misfire, Shyam Narain, Xerxes Technologies, cYs Driver), it has been determined that...

A: Hiring a company to design such a system will result in either paying tens of thousands of dollars, or ending up with a company that cannot complete the project, and...

B: Hiring a solitary coder, such as a skilled member of the scene, will eventually result in the coder being overwhelmed.

Hence, lacking the necessary funds to hire a coding group or company adept enough to complete the task at hand within a reasonable amount of time, we have made the best decision possible, with Artemis, GSHI, and the scene in mind:...

Hackers taking over latest Mario Kart Wii tournament

Hackers taking over latest Mario Kart Wii tournament 50°
344w ago - The newest Mario Kart Wii tournament went live a few days ago, but unfortunately, some participants took it upon themselves to hack their way to the top. Two racers have submitted ludicrous times - 0.004 and 0.609 seconds.

Immediately upon looking at these results, one would quickly surmise that the results would not have been able to have been achieved through ethical means. Also, one of the hackers has gone so far as to dawn the name "ihack@you."

This is not the first time the Mario Kart Wii online system has been hacked. Previously, people began to exploit the Time Trials system to earn impossible times.

Nintendo was able to root out and take care of cheaters, so it is expected that Nintendo will take similar action with this latest issue.

Rumor: Sony making unique Trophies Mandatory in 2009

Rumor: Sony making unique Trophies Mandatory in 2009 300°
346w ago - According to an anonymous development source, Sony will be making the inclusion of trophies mandatory with the release of each new PS3 title going forward in 2009. Doesn't sound too far fetched to us, considering that trophies are essentially Sony's answer to Xbox 360 achievements.

What's interesting, though, is that Sony may be requiring a certain level of variation in regards to trophies. Meaning, if a third-party dev studio is working on a multi-platform project for both PS3 and Xbox 360, they won't be able to simply recycle all of the same challenges in each version of the title.

To quote: While not every game may include Trophies for now, at least one major developer tells Joystiq that Sony's answer to Achievements will be "mandated" by Sony for every new PS3 release in 2009.

This isn't entirely unexpected given recently-revised comments by PSN director of operations, Eric Lampel. What's more interesting, however, is that the developer, which is currently working on an early 2009 release, is also hearing that Sony may be enforcing some measure of uniqueness between spoils earned on its console versus the Xbox 360.

Commented to developer, "We've heard some things that make it sound like we will have to do some unique to PS3 Trophies...this is all very new to us." While...

Note that placement is limited and according to Sony, not all applicants will be chosen, as is usual for offers of this type.

Kingsley: PSP has a good few years left in it still

Kingsley: PSP has a good few years left in it still 50°
350w ago - The PSP is a great little platform with a good few years left in it still thanks to its versatility says Rebellion CTO Chris Kingsley.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Kingsley noted that his company has probably done more games on the PSP than most publishers.

"It wasn't a deliberate choice, it just happened. We were very keen on it as a platform and it took off for us," he said.

Kingsley conceded that not as many publishers are supporting the PSP to the extent they once did.

"Well, you know what people are like - they all like to work on the flashy, high-end stuff.

"But there's still very good business to be done on the less glamorous platforms - look at PlayStation 2, it's still selling bucket-loads of consoles and bucket-loads of games, though they've got to be the right games for the right platform."

He noted that the PSP is "kicking the arse of pretty much every other system out there" in Japan because the right games have come out - with a bit of luck, he thinks that some of those games will come out in Europe and be just as successful.

As a developer, Rebellion has the luxury of focusing on a few products at a time - unlike Sony, who has to take a broad approach with multiple projects which aren't necessarily theirs, making it...
