Nintendo Hires Anti-piracy Guru to Combat R4 Card Sales 300°
August 29, 2009 // 4:32 pm - Nintendo has hired anti-piracy guru Neil Boyd from Warner Bros. in a move to keep the Nintendo DS R4 Card from being sold at both online and offline retailers.

Boyd claims Nintendo has no problem in hurting companies who still sell flash carts for the DS console, to quote:

SCEA Appoints Timothy Bender as Senior VP of Sales 50°
August 24, 2009 // 7:55 pm - Sony Computer Entertainment America has appointed former Livescribe executive Timothy Bender as senior vice president of sales.

Reporting directly to SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton, Bender will be charged with overseeing sales and merchandising initiatives across all PlayStation platforms in the US.

His appointment comes as Sony prepares to release new iterations of its home and portable gaming systems in the form of the PS3 Slim and PSP Go, and the company is gearing up for what Tretton referred to as one its "most aggressive" Christmas seasons.

Sales Ad Reveals XBox 360 Elite Drops to $299 on September 1st 700°
August 21, 2009 // 9:19 pm - As previously reported, today the sales ads for the first week of September at Walmart, Gamestop and Meijer show the Xbox 360 Elite priced at $299 and replacing the current Pro SKU which Microsoft is phasing out.

Judge Orders Microsoft to Pay $290m, Bans MS Word Sales 100°
August 12, 2009 // 8:56 pm - A US federal court has ordered Microsoft to pay over $290m (£175m) for wilfully infringing on a patent by Canadian firm i4i, and has filed an injunction to prevent the sale of Word.

The patent relates to the use of XML, a mark-up language that allows formatting of text and makes files readable across different programs.

To quote: XML is integral to Microsoft's flagship word processing software Word.

Texas district court judge Leonard Davis also filed an injunction preventing Microsoft from selling Word.

Sony Posts $390M Loss as Bravia TV and PlayStation Sales Slump 100°
July 30, 2009 // 4:14 am - According to Bloomberg, today Sony Corporation has reported a second straight quarterly loss as the stronger yen pushed the company further behind Samsung Electronics Company in television sales, and the global recession drove down demand for videogame machines.

The net loss was 37.1 billion yen ($390 million) in the quarter ended June 30, compared with profit of 35 billion yen a year earlier.

July 20, 2009 // 7:40 am - There's an underlying trend beneath this week's Japanese hardware sales rankings - every console that Dragon Quest IX cannot be played on sank like a stone made of lead.

Every console on which Dragon Quest IX can be played skyrocketed like a sky... rocket. Do you see the lesson presented here, gaming hardware manufacturers?

Pachter: PS3 Price Cut by October if Console Sales Keep Crashing 250°
July 13, 2009 // 10:50 pm - Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has predicted that Sony will cut PS3's price before October 1, 2009 if US hardware sales continue to slide.

Speaking in a note today, Pachter estimated that US Wii, 360 and PS3 sales will show a year-on-year decline of 43 percent for June.

Report: Desktop PC Game Sales Rise by 18 Per Cent 100°
May 31, 2009 // 2:10 am - PC Gaming Alliance research indicates desktop game sales rose 18 percent worldwide last year; installed base stands at 228 million.

According to the PCGA's 2008 Horizon's Report, PC gaming software saw revenues reach $12.7 billion in 2008 which is a rise of $1.9 billion, or nearly 18 percent.

Overall, the study found that the PC software and hardware market stood at $68 billion in 2008, with the PCGA saying that number is expected to balloon to $143 billion by 2013.
