Are Sony the Smart Ones with the PS3 in this Console Race?

200°
317w ago - There's no doubt that Sony has made mistakes this generation such as underestimating both Microsoft and Nintendo. Another mistake is relying too much on the brand image and not pumping out enough marketing.

However, if you have a look at the bigger picture, I think Sony are the smart ones in this console race, and I'm going to tell you why...

The Internet has been full of articles on why the PS3 is in trouble and how Sony have made mistakes since it launched. So I thought it would be right to give a fresh opinion on the matter.

There's no question that the PS3 has had a rocky start; it launched with very few quality games and it was argued by many that at its inception there was very little incentive to buy the PS3 over the older and cheaper Xbox 360.

The Xbox also had more titles and many multi-platform games that felt so much better than their PS3 counter-parts. As we approach the PS3's two-year anniversary in Europe however, the console is looking very different.

There are many quality titles under the PS3's belt including some impressive exclusives like LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2. With Killzone 2 and hundreds of other titles just on the horizon, why does the media still bash the PS3?

Could it be 'revenue related'. The huge majority...

LucasArts Still Working on Indiana Jones for PlayStation 3

324w ago - Slipping into the shadows of such titles as Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Fracture, many people have forgotten about one of LucasArts' biggest projects, Indiana Jones.

With no word on the title's development since 2006, gamers have forgotten about the game or figured it was indefinitely shelved. However, speaking with PSU.com, LucasArts confirms the title is still in the works with new details soon on the way.

"LucasArts remains absolutely committed to the Indiana Jones franchise," said the LucasArts representative. "While we are aware that fans have been eagerly awaiting additional information on the upcoming game, they can rest assured that details are forthcoming."

For those of you not up to date on the new Indiana Jones title, the game will be utilizing much of the same technology found in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. This includes Natural Motion's Euphoria Engine, Pixelux's DMM technology and Havok physics. As of right now, there has been no concrete release date given, but we suspect it'll show up in 2009.

Smith & Jones Centre Founder: Compulsive Gamers Not Addicts

100°
327w ago - Ninety per cent of the young people who seek treatment for compulsive computer gaming are not addicted.

So says Keith Bakker the founder and head of Europe's first and only clinic to treat gaming addicts.

The Smith & Jones Centre in Amsterdam, has treated hundreds of young gamers since the clinic opened in 2006. But the clinic is changing its treatment as it realises that compulsive gaming is a social rather than a psychological problem.

Using traditional abstinence-based treatment models the clinic has had very high success rate treating people who also show other addictive behaviours such as drug taking and excessive drinking.

But Mr Bakker believes that this kind of cross-addiction affects only 10% of gamers. For the other 90% who may spend four hours a day or more playing games such as World of Warcraft, he no longer thinks addiction counselling is the way to treat these people.

"These kids come in showing some kind of symptoms that are similar to other addictions and chemical dependencies," he says.

"But the more we work with these kids these less I believe we can call this addiction. What many of these kids need is their parents and their school teachers - this is a social problem."

In response to this realisation the clinic...

PSN Review - Let's Be Honest!

352w ago - It's now been almost 2 years since the PlayStation 3 found its way into consumers hands, and things are looking brighter over the horizon. Blu-Ray has won the format war, there's a good lineup of titles dropping throughout 2008, developers are getting more of a handle on the hardware, and sales are keeping pace - at least with the Xbox 360.

Unfortunately, one area has stayed stagnant since its inception, and there doesn't seem to be much of a sign of improvement until at least this fall. I am referring to the PlayStation Network, and its abysmal showing this far.

As we all know, Microsoft came out of the gate with an extremely strong showing in almost every aspect of their online service. The marketplace, albeit a bit slow in the beginning, was soon filled to the brim with content for users to download.

Whether it be the extremely functional community features, demos of almost every game released for the system, a plethora of downloadable content and titles, or the much hailed foray into downloadable movies and TV shows, LIVE has set the bar in terms of what a console online experience should be.

No one expected Sony to deliver to the same extent as Microsoft, simply because Microsoft had years of experience with the first Xbox, as well as a much stronger software backbone,...
