Xbox 360 secrets: After Falcon comes Jasper

Xbox 360 secrets: After Falcon comes Jasper 50°
386w ago - Microsoft didn't want you to know about Falcon, and it certainly doesn't want you to know about its successor Jasper. But that's another secret we have to unveil.

Jasper is the code name for the next motherboard for the Xbox 360. It will becoming next August, in time for next year's holiday season. Jasper is going to have a 65-nanometer graphics chip from ATI Technologies, as well as smaller memory chips. That isn't much information, but it's enough to tell us about their cost-reduction plan. If you ask me, it's a bit of a slow pace.

I don't know why it will take Microsoft essentially three years to cost reduce the size of the graphics chip through a manufacturing shrink. It doesn't seem like they're in a hurry to launch a redesigned Xbox 360 graphics chip, considering that Intel introduced its first 65-nm chips a long time ago. ATI uses TSMC to make its chips out of Taiwan, and TSMC hasn't been the fastest at moving to 65-nm manufacturing. I understand these tasks are difficult and they take a lot of engineering resources. Microsoft has had to divert a lot of engineers to debugging problems with Xbox 360 reliability. Even so, you would think that they would have moved faster, since the move to 65-nm graphics chip will likely be one of the best things they can do to improve the reliability.

Sony explains decision to discontinue 60GB PS3

386w ago - 40GB machine represents all the power of PS3' says platform holder
SCEE has given the reasons behind its decision to phase out the 60GB PS3 in Europe.

This morning, the format holder told MCV that once remaining stocks of the SKU had sold out in the territory, the 40GB PS3 would be the only model available to consumers.

The firm comments that the 'missing' features lacking in the 40GB SKU are 'easily upgraded', and that it believes backward compatibility with PS2 - a function the 40GB model lacks - is 'less important now than when we launched'.

The firm explains in a statement:

'Our offering in the UK market place for Christmas are the two 'sku's announced on Friday, but as the 60GB stock is depleted the £299 40GB SKU will be the only version available going forward.

'The 40GB machine represents all the power and potential of PlayStation 3 at a very compelling price.

Whilst the feature set of the 40GB is a result of extensive feedback and research, all the 'missing' features should some consumers require them are easily upgraded with USB memory card readers, USB hubs, or bigger external USB or internal HDs.

'The only functionality that is being removed is backwards compatibility - and this is because we believe...

LA Noire Too Big for Xbox 360?

LA Noire Too Big for Xbox 360? 50°
386w ago - Team Bondi must have at least a few people working in their Ultimo, Sydney office, according to a tip we received over the weekend pointing us to a blog with "exclusive" information on the title. From the post:

* The game will be a free-roaming title with a historically-accurate recreation of Los Angeles in 1947.
* Team Bondi has even hired a costume designer to research the clothing of the era so the game's attire can be accurate.
* Aside from main story, side missions will be based on actual cases pulled straight of the newspapers of 1947.
* A US Marine plays a big role in the story.
* Not so exclusive...but LA Noire definitely ain't coming to Xbox 360, the size of the game is an obstacle to this.
It's only a few tidbits, but it's more than we had before. Of note is that another developer is finding DVDs to be too small.
