Sony Bringing Direct PS Store to PSP this Fiscal Year

Sony Bringing Direct PS Store to PSP this Fiscal Year 50°
349w ago - We finally have an idea of when the PSP accessible PS Store will launch: this fiscal year. Previously detailed in a GDC presentation last year, the PSP Store will allow consumers to download PSN offerings direct from their PSP via WiFi connection.

At its marketing conference in Japan today, Sony said that the functionality will be made available through a firmware update.

The company's 2008 fiscal year ends on March 31, 2009, so the launch date could be anywhere from now until then, though we're personally hoping it hits before the end of this year.

Further details are available via the Playstation Business Review PDF file.

Sony: Restoring TV and Game Profits is Priority

Sony: Restoring TV and Game Profits is Priority 200°
350w ago - Sony CEO Howard Stringer has expressed the company's desire to turn around the losses of its games and television divisions this year.

Stringer said at a recent shareholder meeting that restoring profitability in its TV and game businesses is now the top priority, after the company posted losses of $3.4 billion in two years in the PlayStation division, and it revealed in May that the Bravia division had losses of $678 million last fiscal year (ending March 31).

Sony, however, forecasts PS3 to sell 10 million units this year, along with nine million PS2s, and expects the games unit to post its first annual profit in three years.

Stringer says the company is striving for innovation. "Three years ago, we were criticized for the lack of innovation. Three days ago, in a UK brand poll, Sony was ranked No.1 this year," he said, referring to a poll we reported on previously.

"But, we are not No.1 in my mind yet," he noted, according to Bloomberg.

Sony brings PlayStation 3 interface to the big screen

Sony brings PlayStation 3 interface to the big screen 100°
351w ago - Sony declares "game on" as Adam Turner discovers the PS3's menu system is now built into Bravia televisions.

The user interface seems to be an afterthought on many consumer electronic devices, but Sony has obviously had its UI boffins working overtime (playing games consoles - nice work if you can get it).

They've decided that the XMB (Xross Media Bar) menu system used by the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable is more friendly that the menus used by Sony's big-arse Bravia LCD televisions, so the new generation of Bravias will utilise the PS3's menu system.

The old Bravias were designed around a standard tree-like menu system, with options opening up to the right as you scroll down through the categories. The Bravia's Xross Media Bar menus are built around a similar concept, the menus are sightly more animated but it still requires you to scroll down through categories as your options pop up on the right.

The Xross Media Bar actually has a similar look and feel to the Vista Media Centre interface and even the changes in Windows Mobile 6.1.

The Bravia's move to Xross Media Bar is more cosmetic than functional, yet I can't deny that I prefer it over the old Bravia menus. Smooth and responsive menus reduce the feeling that you're fighting with a device....

Outrage over GTA IV problems

Outrage over GTA IV problems 250°
352w ago - A significant number of members of Xbox.com are reporting issues with GTA IV including freezing and the 'Red Ring of Death' and are outraged that Microsoft and Rockstar have yet to comment on the situation.

To quote: "If you guys actually read and check Rockstar's official GTA IV forums, you'll find out that they are aware of the freezing problems for PS3 and 360. Their current workaround is: "Delete your saved game, and start over."" said one member.

Further investigation by another member lead to this:

"As it stands, there's no fix. But we did some research and believe we have the answer as to why this is happening.

Rockstar, in their very finite wisdom designed the game to have no loading times. That's great, except for the fact that GTA IV now overloads the cache and causes a lock-up (freeze). So now, instead of saving load times and providing a seamless experience, Rockstar has forced some machines to crash while attempting to load from the cache.

The solution: Rockstar needs to release a patch that limits the strain on the RAM right out of the gate. Can they even do this? Who knows? They haven't managed to make a game that doesn't freeze in two years. Unless you count the mega epic "Table Tennis"."

MGS4 Limited Edition PS3 Bundle Ordering A Huge Disaster

MGS4 Limited Edition PS3 Bundle Ordering A Huge Disaster 200°
354w ago - Update: It appears that Konami may have dropped the $500 insurance charge and that pre-orders have temporarily ceased. The Konami online store asks customers to "Please check back tomorrow (May 20, 2008), when we will make available more stock for pre-orders."

One might think that after the registration disaster that was the Metal Gear Online beta sign up process that Konami would be well prepared for the pre-ordering onslaught that awaited them today.

Surprisingly, it wasn't, resulting in what can be be described as a clusterfuck of massive proportions as many gamers attempted to order their Metal Gear Solid 4 limited edition PlayStation 3 bundle.

In addition to tacking on a $500 insurance charge–which we're told is mandatory and refundable, though we can't confirm right now–we've yet to read of a single successful check out for the "gun metal" version of the console. As of right now, the Konami store is throwing a 503 error, most likely due to the heavy volume of MGS4 fans trying desperately to buy their PS3s.

Anyone out there lucky enough to secure one yet? Thanks to the many tipsters who sent this one in.
