Report: PS3 Sales Rising, Xbox 360 Headed Down

Report: PS3 Sales Rising, Xbox 360 Headed Down 200°
350w ago - The future of the current generation of consoles is in a flux, but sales of the PlayStation 3 are seen as rising, while the Xbox 360 is "headed down."

According to Christopher Null of Yahoo! Tech, the argument that Grand Theft Auto IV will be lucky to sell a little over half of what Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas sold in 2004, cost $100 million to develop, and has failed to boost sales of consoles doesn't mean next-gen gaming has hit a wall.

"At $60 a pop, GTA IV is poised to rake in a solid $720 million in sales, at least," Null said. "If GTA IV had been a movie production, it'd be an unmitigated smash hit."

There are also countless reasons to some of the weakness in the current console market, he said.

"Front and center is a sour economy and an industry that still expects consumers to pay a minimum of $400 for a PlayStation 3. But PS3 sales are rising (and will continue to do so as prices fall). Xbox 360 sales are headed down. And of course, the Wii is a success story that no one can contest."

"The future of this generation of consoles is in flux, but there still seems to be plenty of activity in an industry that's now worth some $10 billion," he said.

ESRB Cracks Down on Premature Game Leaks

ESRB Cracks Down on Premature Game Leaks 50°
350w ago - The joy of discovering unannounced downloadable game titles on the ESRB's ever-reliable Web site will soon be a thing of the past, as a new policy aimed at halting premature leaks on the site has been put forward, according to an internal memo passed to Web site Next-Gen.

When submitting a new game title to the ESRB's ratings database, publishers will now have the option of entering in specific reveal date, letting the ESRB know exactly when to release information regarding the title to the public.

If no date is specified, the title will automatically appear in the ESRB's public search database 30 days after it has been rated.

Well now, that's certainly exciting news for publishers. As for end-users, not much at all. Guess we'll have to rely on the European rating bodies from this point forward.

350w ago - As expected, the latest version of Mozilla's Firefox web browser, Firefox 3, was made available for download at 6pm BST today. Another nail in the MS coffin!

Firefox 3 is now available for download HERE.

After nearly three years in development, last Wednesday Mozilla announced that Firefox 3 was ready for release. During Firefox 3's development, memory-usage improvement has been a consistent theme.

Firefox's third release candidate was released on Wednesday last week, and contained a fix for loading issues with Mac OS X. The final release is identical to RC3, said the organization.

Mozilla is hoping to set a Guinness World Record for the most number of downloads of an application in a day, on the release of the browser.

There is currently no official Guinness World Record for the total number of downloads of an application in a day. During the first 24 hours of Firefox 3's release, Mozilla is aiming for over 1.6 million downloads and hoping for five million.

Mozilla has encouraged its community of over 175 million users to sign up on the spreadfirefox.com marketing site to receive Firefox 3 on Tuesday, to host download parties, and to put Firefox badges on websites and blogs....

Canadian bill targets illegal downloads, unlocking iphones, more 250°
351w ago - According to the Canadian Press, the "Federal government is expected to introduce legislation Thursday that will seek to make it easier to prosecute individuals who download copyrighted material from the Internet."

Experts say that Canada has finally given in to pressure from the U.S government to crackdown on illegal filesharing with provisions including: A $500 fine for each illegal file shared online, making it illegal to unlock cellphones or copy music from protected CDs to iPods, forbidding the right to copy "time shifted" shows onto personal video recorders if flagged by broadcasters.

To quote: Although it is currently unclear how the copyright bill will be enforced, observers have said enforcement could be aided if Canada signs on to the proposed Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, to be tabled next month at the G8 summit in Japan.

The agreement, which was recently published on a Web site known for disseminating leaked documents, would require Internet service providers to police the content that travels over its network.

According to the four-page document, ISPs could required to filter pirated digital files and reveal the identities of customers suspected of infringing on copyrighted material.
