Labels deny deals on file sharing 50°
January 28, 2008 // 1:32 pm - Three major record labels have denied signing deals allowing their music to feature on a new file-sharing service offering unlimited free downloads.

The service, Qtrax, boasted it would carry up to 30 million tracks from "all the major labels".

But Warner, EMI and Universal all say they have not licensed their music.

Qtrax said it expected an agreement to be reached with Warner and that terms had been agreed with the others even if deals had not been formally signed.

Discussions ongoing

Guardian Prefers PS3 40GB To Xbox 360 Arcade 50°
November 5, 2007 // 1:48 pm - Now that there's a multitude of versions and bundles for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it's trickier for the general consumer to figure out which to purchase.

The Guardian recently did an analysis of both PS3 and Xbox 360 and has decidedly more positive things to say about Sony's new iteration as compared to Microsoft's.

"So which should you go for? I'll leave the basic Xbox vs. PS3 quandary to you, but as for packages, at £299 the 40GB PlayStation 3 is good value - it'll be rare for you ever to need more than two USB ports. Keep an eye out for retailer bundle deals...

The Pirate Bay To Bring Back OiNK 50°
October 26, 2007 // 3:31 pm - The Pirate Bay is currently working on an OiNK replacement in an attempt to bring the hundreds of thousands of music albums back online that disappeared during the raid. The replacement will be released within a week and on the domain.

BOiNK will be a little different from OiNK. For instance, the tracker will be public and it will start out with a lot less torrents than OiNK had when it was raided. The success of BOiNK will mainly depend on the former OiNK community, who will be asked to upload their old OiNK torrents.

The most important thing about BOiNK is perhaps...

Anti file-sharing laws considered 50°
October 25, 2007 // 4:36 am - The UK government could legislate to crack down on illegal file-sharers, a senior politician has told the BBC's iPM programme. Lord Triesman, the parliamentary Under Secretary for Innovation, Universities and Skills, said intellectual property theft would not be tolerated.

"If we can't get voluntary arrangements we will legislate," he said. The comments could prove controversial with privacy advocates and internet service providers.

Lord Triesman called on internet service providers to take a "more activist role" in the problem of illegal file-sharing.

Go exploring with Afrika and Aqua on PS3 50°
September 20, 2007 // 7:53 pm - We've managed to track down and capture the new trailer for Afrika, PS3's safari-cum-photography game, and it's looking more and more intriguing every time we see it. Details are still scarce about how it'll actually work, but seeing as you'll be using a camera, at least in some way, we can almost guarantee that any pictures could be used as your wallpaper on the PS3 XMB.

And Sony's adventuring doesn't end there; not content with housing tropical fish in a virtual...

Chinese web filtering 'erratic' 50°
September 12, 2007 // 5:23 pm - China's firewall that tries to sanitise web browsing is much more porous than previously thought, says a study.

Carried out by US researchers outside China, it found that the firewall often failed to block what the Chinese government finds objectionable.

The firewall was least effective when lots of Chinese web users were online.

Often, said the study, the idea of the firewall was more effective than the technology at discouraging talk about banned subjects.
