Sony Chart Reminds Gamers of the PlayStation 3's Offerings

Sony Chart Reminds Gamers of the PlayStation 3's Offerings 100°
320w ago - An external SCEA PR rep has told Edge-Online why a chart (below) was released by Sony indicating that the PS3 was cheaper than Microsoft's XBox 360 and Nintendo's Wii console.

The rep noted that it was thought to be a good time to remind everyone of "our strong offerings".

To quote: An external SCEA PR rep From The agency Porter Novelli told us the company released the chart because they "thought it would be a good time just to remind everyone of our strong offerings," which automatically implies that they feel people have either forgotten about the PS3's inherent value or never seriously considered the PS3's value, due to the higher price tag.

It's highly likely that amidst this PS3 price-drop rumoring that Sony wanted to tell the core audience, "Hey, don't wait for a drop, it's a steal at $399, honest."

I'd argue that today PS3 is a fine value, on par with Xbox 360, particularly for gamers in 2009, when it appears that Sony's internal developers will really begin to bear fruit.

Nevertheless, I'm glad I'm not the one that has to figure out how to get that value message across to consumers.

CES 09: MTV Networks Partnering with Sony's PlayStation Network

CES 09: MTV Networks Partnering with Sony's PlayStation Network 50°
321w ago - Programming from Viacom's MTV Networks is set to come to PlayStation Network's video service, Sony Computer Entertainment America announced at CES on Thursday.

The partnership between the two companies involves MTVN brands MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Spike, Logo, CMT, The N, TV Land and Atom. TV shows that will be available for purchase via PSN include South Park, SpongeBob SquarePants and Love Bus with Bret Michaels, and eventually new shows due to premier in spring.

In November 2006, Microsoft announced a similar deal to bring programming from MTV Networks to Xbox Live. For companies like Microsoft and Sony, video delivery has become more than just a peripheral feature as digital distriubtion technologies improve and consumers lap up the content at a rapid pace.

Sony's video delivery service hosts around 1,200 movies and over 3,000 TV episodes, which can be viewed via PS3. Standard definition content can be transferred for viewing on PSP.

Microsoft's Own 'LittleBigPlanet' Dubbed Kodu to Launch in Spring

Microsoft's Own 'LittleBigPlanet' Dubbed Kodu to Launch in Spring 50°
321w ago - It has been confirmed that Kodu will hit the Xbox 360 in the Spring. This is a piece of software designed to assist anyone even as young as 7 to create their own video games.

To quote: The idea of video game players making their own games arrived on console systems three months ago with Sony's release of LittleBigPlanet for the PlayStation 3. That game let players create new environments and levels for the game's character SackBoy.

Kodu is also expected to have some online sharing features if privacy concerns can be addressed properly, says lead designer Matt MacLaurin. And Kodu, because it is more programming-based, will give designers more control over the rules that govern the characters in their games.

"Although these are programming constructs, we tried to express them in terms that almost a toddler can understand," he says. Learning is at the heart of Kodu. At home one night, MacLaurin says he "started thinking what is my (four-year-old) daughter going to think computers are for and what is she going to think her own abilities in regard to the computer are."

He decided to create a simple game creation program that "you could sit down and start creating right away and play in half an hour have something that is really fun to play with," he says.

While retailers like Amazon, GameStop and Play have had Spore Galactic Adventures listed for a March release for a week or two now, EA made the expansion official today. It's planning to reveal details on the Maxis-developed expansion later this month at an event in San Francisco.

And, going by the wording of the invite, it sounds like EA and Maxis have additional Spore products in the pipe for 2009. We're RSVPing now and we'll let you know exactly what the "Spore line-up for 2009" is looking like in a fortnight.

Widespread Device Failures, Microsoft Facing Red Ring of Zune?

Widespread Device Failures, Microsoft Facing Red Ring of Zune? 200°
322w ago - An as-yet unspecified number of Microsoft Zune 30s stopped working at exactly the same time across the US earlier this week.

Gizmodo reports that "the players began freezing at about midnight last night, becoming totally unresponsive and practically useless" and that the "crisis has been dubbed by Zune users 'Y2K9', due to the apparently synchronized faceplantings across the country."

A Gizmodo tipster explained that the Zune's appeared to "either reset, or were already off" and that "when turning on, the thing loads up and... freezes with a full loading bar... it seems everyone with a 30GB HDD model has had this happen to them."

Hundreds of others are already reporting similar Zune problems on the Zune support and on Zune fan forums. Microsoft is yet to comment on the problem. We'll be sure to bring you updates as they come in.
