DRLTools DRLGen v0.90 - Easy PS3 Blu-ray Playback Fix Arrives

750°
217w ago - A few weeks ago among some other work-arounds we reported on a project aiming to fix PlayStation 3 Blu-ray drives for those who downgraded their console, and today the group has released DRLTools DRLGen v0.90 suite offering an easy to use PS3 Blu-ray playback fix.

Download: DRLTools DRLGen v0.90 for PS3

From the included ReadMe file:

BACKGROUND

Our quest to restore BD playback for those PS3s that lost it after downgrading continues. Unfortunately our project suffered a serious setback last week when one of our discoveries was prematurely leaked: A potentially harmful and incomplete method to restore BD playback was disclosed by an attention-seeking individual. It should be noted that the fix in question is only a "band-aid" solution to the problem.

There is a very real possibility of future drive revocation resulting in PERMANENTLY broken playback! However, to make using it safer for those who wish to apply it, we have created this collection of DRL Tools. In the meantime we are...

SynaPS3 - PS3 Compatibility, Backup and Homebrew Library

550°
223w ago - After being delayed for several days pending some bugs and features, we're proud to release SynaPS3 - PS3 compatibility, backup and homebrew library with all but 1 intended release feature!

Download: SynaPS3 / SynaPS3 GIT

SynaPS3 is a simple library for people using the Sony PS3 Cell SDK, primarily made for making applications universally compatible with payloads, to help extend and improve existing functions for homebrew, and to add new functions.

Documentation for SynaPS3 is on github. Some of the most notable features of SynaPS3 included syscall36 compatibility on ALL PL3 payloads, and syscall35 compatibility on Hermes v3 and Hermes v4 payloads. To integrate these compatibility fixes it's as simple as opening the source of an existing program, removing the syscall35/syscall36 functions, and including SynaPS3!

SynaPS3 also has functions to help save you time while coding, such as ReadFirmwareVersion, IsBlurayGame, Firmware342Fix, and more.

SynaPS3 is nowhere near where we want it to be yet. This is only the beginning. SynaPS3 aims to become a full library, with PS3 dialogs and full PNG output.

A decent chunk of our code was...

Rumor: Sony Rep Reveals PS3 Backwards Compatibility Plans

800°
225w ago - Today TheGameHeadz.com (linked above) reports that a Rep revealed Sony's PS3 backwards compatibility plans to them at a recent press event.

While they didn't reveal their informant's name, a few months ago a patent for an adapter to make PS3 backwards compatible was uncovered.

To quote: "It was clear from our conversation that Sony likes the idea of backwards compatibility, but hadn't come to a conclusion until recently, on how to incorporate it.

The decision Sony finally came to is the one already in play, HD remastering.

"Remastering didn't come up until about two years ago. For a developer, remastering in HD took a moderate amount of time and effort to achieve, and with the right title it could be very successful. Once we noticed the benefits of HD remastering, the decision was made to use God of War 1 & 2 as the test for the market, and they delivered.

The God of War Collection had reached almost a million copies sold just after the holiday. Shortly aftter that Activision, EA, UbiSoft, Konami, and SquareEnix were all on board to issue ReMastered Edition of their best Playstation 2 Games."

He went on to say doing backwards compatibility...
