Sony Shows an Exclusive Desire to Win the Next-gen Console War

Sony Shows an Exclusive Desire to Win the Next-gen Console War 350°
299w ago - First it came in the form of an epic 'screw you' to every non-Sony gamer who was looking forward to the simultaneous multiplatform PAL release of Ghostbusters: The Video Game.

The common criticism was that Microsoft had done it for a long time, so why shouldn't Sony be able to do the same thing?

As time passed it became clear that Atari was in some potentially dire financial straits that may well have acted as necessary motivation to accept Sony's offer.

Potentially Sony was acting as a saviour and throwing Atari a lifeline that allowed them to release a game that has enjoyed considerable positive hype.

The other platforms aren't missing out on Ghostbusters entirely; they're merely forced to wait for a period of time before they can access it.

In this respect, the Ghostbusters debacle can be seen as 'just desserts' for Microsoft who have been more than willing to do such things in the past.

But then came the announcement that Batman: Arkham Asylum, another multiplatform release, is set to receive exclusive content for PS3 owners. PS3 owners who purchase Arkham Asylum will be able to access The Joker in the game's Challenge Modes.

EA: Sony's Got a Lot of Great Games, XBox 360 is Maxed Out

EA: Sony's Got a Lot of Great Games, XBox 360 is Maxed Out 350°
299w ago - Senior VP of EA Games Europe Patrick Suderland described the Xbox 360 as "Maxed out", in comparison to the PS3.

This comment came in tow of Sony's and Microsoft's presentations at the recently-concluded E3 2009 Expo.

That's not to say he meant it in a bad way, however, to quote:

I like the Natal. That's cool. It's an interesting device, so I'm truly impressed by Xbox. It's my personal favorite console... I think Microsoft is on a roll right now. They're doing really well. If I was Sony, I would have a headache, to be honest.

He did say too, however, that Sony does have a lot of good games this year. "If you go to their booth, there's a very consistent, high-quality product line-up and that will help them." Now this is where the "maxed out" statement comes out.

I do think that we'll see developers inside the organization getting to understand the PS3 better and I think that we're getting more power out of PS3 right now... I think that we've maxed out the 360 but we haven't maxed out the PS3.

Sony: E3 is Not the Right Place to Announce a PS3 Price Cut

Sony: E3 is Not the Right Place to Announce a PS3 Price Cut 100°
299w ago - With E3 2009 being over, some are left wondering why Sony didn't announce a PS3 price cut as speculated through this year's conference.

Sony answered during a recent interview with Kotaku, as follows:

Despite expectations that Sony would lower the price of the PS3 at E3, the company announced no price drop at the big show. We asked why.

"From our perspective, this show is all about content," Sony's head of PlayStation marketing in the U.S., Peter Dille, told Kotaku in an interview yesterday. "We believe that our content story is unrivaled.

It's really a relentless line-up of great exclusive games that will speak volumes to the value inherent in the PS3. Obviously people come to E3 expecting all sorts of announces.

We've got a plan in place for the platform. A price drop at the show wasn't part of it."

Why Sony's E3 Conference Took Home the Crown This Year

Why Sony's E3 Conference Took Home the Crown This Year 100°
299w ago - Here's the deal: content is all that matters in this industry. Without the content, which means we're talking about software, all you have are three really big paperweights.

Granted, many more factors have come into play in the new generation, as systems like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are fully functional and massively capable multimedia devices. But at the end of the day, we own our systems so we can play the games we love, and as I've said many times before, Sony's software lineup greatly outstrips Microsoft's.

Yes, one can claim that with the announcement of a Metal Gear Solid for the 360 and Project Natal, that alone might top Sony's conference in terms of a "wow" factor.

But what are we really talking about here? The PS3 is getting Rising, too, and let's not forget that the PSP is also getting Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Furthermore, Sony's motion tech was every bit as impressive as Microsoft's in my eyes, and I'm not the type of guy that puts much stock in motion sensing.

The PSP Go! wasn't a huge announcement in my eyes, but it was big, and the exclusive lineup that continually pleasured our senses during Sony's conference was unmatched. I want Alan Wake as much as anyone and I buy every Halo they make (provided it's not a strategy game), but those...
