Industry Trends: Microsoft is the New Sony, Sony is Now Nintendo

250°
292w ago - Sony and Nintendo have studied each other over the years and formed patterns to combat against each other.

Nintendo relied strongly on superior first-party offerings, while Sony created strong third-party relationships and offered a wide variety of exclusive titles.

A change of strategy is now being made according to the Examiner, to quote:

This generation, Sony has become much more reliant on the prospect of first-party offerings to bring in the gamers. Uncharted, InFamous, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, two Resistance titles, Ratchet and Clank, etc, have become the mainstay titles to the PS3.

Thankfully, the first-party offerings from Sony have been amazing. Introducing several new franchises from established developers, Sony has been able to create a lineup strong enough to rival that of Nintendo. On the flipside, Sony doesn't have the in with the third-party developers.

This biggest, and by far one of the best games this generation, third-party title Sony has exclusive rights to is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. After MGS4, we have scrapings of major releases.

Several niche titles have seen release like Disgaea 3 and the under loved Valkyria Chronicles. Sony had to make a shift and start crafting AAA first-party titles to counteract...

Banned Gamer Alleges Sony Violated Free Speech & Stole Money

550°
292w ago - A PlayStation 3 gamer has filed suit (PDF) in U.S. District Court in California, alleging that SCEA suppressed his free speech rights and caused him pain and suffering by banning his account on the PlayStation Network.

In a complaint filed on July 6th, Erik Estavillo of San Jose writes that he is disabled by a variety of disorders; among these are agoraphobia, a fear of crowds, to quote:

The pain and suffering was caused by the defendant, Sony, banning the plaintiff's account on the PlayStation 3 Network, in which the plaintiff relies on to socialize with other people, since it's the only way the plaintiff can truly socialize since he also suffers from Agoraphobia...

Estavillo's issues with SCEA apparently stem from his play of the PS3 hit Resistance: Fall of Man:

The ban is supposedly due to the behavior of the plaintiff when he plays the video game "Resistance: Fall of Man," which Sony owns and employs moderators for its online play. These moderators kick and ban players that they feel are deserving; though their biases to a player seem to be what determines the kick or ban...

The plaintiff was exercising his First Amendment Rights to Freedom of Speech in the game's public forum when he...

Sony's New PS3 Motion Controller is 'Army Accurate'

550°
293w ago - In an interview with Eurogamer following the Develop Conference, Kish Hirani and SCEE's vice president of research and development, Paul Holman, shared just how accurate the upcoming PS3 Motion Controller is.

To quote: The controller, reports Sony, is incredibly accurate.

"What most people are really surprised about is the precision," Sony's Kish Hirani, head of developer services, tells game site Eurogamer.

"It's scarily good. The army has had this sort of technology for a long time, so a lot of academians have seen these things, but when you see a consumer space device with this level of accuracy – that's when developers say, 'Wow.'"

Something else that might make developers say "wow"? It's possible to set the color of the controller's light up ball.

"I'm not a games designer, but if I was I might use it as a muzzle flash if you're using a gun, or use it as a paintbrush you can use to dip in and pick up different colors," Hirani adds.
