PS3 Slim Officially Confirmed By Sony's Kaz Hirai for Sept at $299 100°
289w ago - At GamesCom today, Sony's Kaz Hirai has confirmed the PS3 is getting a new model. That's right, the PS3 Slim! It will be available in stores during the first week of September and include the same features and functionality.

A 120GB hard drive is also included, and it will be 33 percent smaller and 36 percent lighter than the original PS3 console.

The cost? It will be 299. That's $299, 299 euros and 29980 yen. That will also be the price for the current PS3 starting tomorrow.

The PS3 Slim (below) looks like the leaked box model rumored from several months ago.

Finally, a release date for the PS3 Slim will vary by region but it will be available everywhere by September 1, 2009.

Sony's PlayStation Portable May See Trophies After All

Sony's PlayStation Portable May See Trophies After All 300°
289w ago - At less than two months away from the launch of the PSP Go, it now appears that portable trophies could be heading our way in the future.

In a recent interview with PlayStation: The Official Magazine, they asked if Trophies will "ever be available for PSP games?"

To quote: "It's under discussion, but there are some technical challenges," replied Shu Yoshida, SCEA Senior Vice President of Product Development.

Director of PlayStation Network Operations, Eric Lempel, previously said during E3 that we're simply "not going to see Trophies on the PSP."

His main reasoning being in the interest of "keeping it secure," as artificially increasing their ranks and Trophies "kills the whole system."

Those security issues and "technical challenges" are no doubt linked to the fact that the PSP has been hacked time and again.

Surely, a simple method to prevent the homebrew gamer from bumping their trophy count is to implement anti-cheat protection, forcing PSP trophy hunters to remain logged in to PSN to unlock the goods.

Well, at least we've...

FYE, Hastings Ad Reveals $100 Price Cut on Sony's PlayStation 3

FYE, Hastings Ad Reveals $100 Price Cut on Sony's PlayStation 3 100°
289w ago - Following analyst Michael Pachter's prediction from earlier today comes another PS3 price cut ad leak... this time from Hastings, a Texas-based retailer.

According to the ad, the current stock of 160GB PS3s will be cut to $400, a $100 savings over the original.

In related news, CAG is reporting FYE is now selling 80GB PS3 consoles for $299, with the Uncharted bundle for $400.

To quote: Of potential importance is the phrasing: the ad mentions the PS3 is experiencing a "price cut" versus a temporary "sale." The cut begins September 8th, weeks after Sony's press conference at Gamescom.

The reduced price could be exclusive to Hastings, and isn't necessarily indicative of a nationwide price drop. However, a price drop on current PS3 models can clear inventory and make way for a possibly upgraded one.

Sony Testing Laugh Detection and Emotional Tracking Software

Sony Testing Laugh Detection and Emotional Tracking Software 50°
289w ago - Today Siliconera (linked above) has uncovered an SCEA patent application which reveals that Sony is experimenting with laugh detection and emotional tracking software.

According to the documentation, the application picks up metadata, including laughter recorded by the microphone and a user's expression from the camera.

Apparently the software isn't limited to video games, and can be used for TV shows and films along with other media presentations.

To quote: Both devices are linked to a "game console", shown as a PlayStation 3 in the diagram, which identifies the user, notes emotions, and transfers the data over a network.

How will Sony identify emotions? The patent mentions identifying body gestures and tracking group interactions "such as when two individuals give each other a 'High Five.'"

Sony also developed smile detecting software for their Cyber Shot W120 camera which could be used too.

While the patent focuses on laugher it can identify other emotions such as sadness, excitement, anger, joy, interest, and boredom. For example, boredom may be detected if a user is "looking away from the presentation, yawning, or talking over the presentation."

Sony Makes Giant PlayStation 3 and PSP Sand Sculptures 500°
290w ago - In keeping with the PlayStation Beach Resort theme we have going today, here is another bit of related news.

Siliconera (linked above) has posted up some pictures (below) taken from Korea's world sand sculpting championship where Sony made giant PlayStation 3 (dubbed "SandStation 3") and PSP sand sculptures.

To quote: Donghae City was the held the first Korean Invitational World Sand Sculpting Championship. What does this have to with video games?

Sony Computer Entertainment Korea showed up and joined the sand sculpting fun.

That's what SCEK made and they seem quite proud of it since they sent out a news bulletin reporting their marketing stunt.
