Meet the latest answer to child obesity: the Wii

Meet the latest answer to child obesity: the Wii 50°
370w ago - With the nation's children suffering from huge weight gains, health experts now want them to start doing 'virtual PE'

Computer games, the prime suspects when health experts try to explain why the UK's children are the most obese in the nation's history, have now emerged as a potential cure for overweight youngsters.

With the Government desperately trying ever more imaginative ways to improve rates of exercise and participation in sport, officials are considering encouraging schools across the country to put the new generation of "active computer games" on the curriculum, to help the most at-risk youngsters out of their sedentary lifestyles.

Child obesity rates have trebled over the past 20 years; 10 per cent of six-year-olds and 17 per cent of 15-year-olds are now considered obese. Last year, a government report predicted that this would rise to 26 per cent of children by 2050. The report also warned of the life-threatening problems of childhood obesity and predicted a 70 per cent rise in type 2 diabetes, a 30 per cent increase in strokes and a 20 per cent increase in heart disease.

The latest attempt to tackle the problem stems from an acclaimed initiative in which Nintendo Wii consoles were used to tempt inactive pupils into "virtual PE" after years of dodging games lessons....

Turok Patch Removes Controversial Team-Kill Feature

Turok Patch Removes Controversial Team-Kill Feature 50°
370w ago - The controversial feature in the upcoming Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game Turok that rewards players for killing their teammates will be removed with a patch, says publisher Touchstone.

While Turok will ship with the "Grab Bag" achievement intact, the patch will be available online on February 5, the day the game hits store shelves.

The "Grab Bag" achievement was to reward players for killing "at least 1 creature, 1 enemy, 1 teammate, and yourself" in a single online match of the first-person shooter.

After the patch, the achievement will only require you to kill a creature, and enemy, and yourself -- not a teammate.

When the achievement list for the game was unveiled in November, would-be buyers were understandably upset that the developers were actually going to reward the sort of anti-social behavior that already plagues Xbox Live.

Computer And Video Games called it the "worst multiplayer achievement in the history of games."

After the controversy started up, the game's developers at Vancouver-based Propaganda Games said that they would look into releasing a patch after Turok launches "if it does become an issue."

Seems as if they decided instead to get right out in front of it. Since "Grab Bag" only affects the game's online mode, players...

Smash Bros. Brawl Unfit for Wii?

Smash Bros. Brawl Unfit for Wii? 50°
370w ago - JC Barnett, the pseudonym for a games developer working out of Japan, has a somewhat unexpected commentary on the upcoming Super Smash Bros.

Brawl release in the Land of the Rising Sun on his Japanmanship blog. Essentially, Barnett believes the title will sell well enough, but ultimately underperform due to the Wii being a casual gamer's machine - similar to what happened recently to No More Heroes in Japan, just on a larger scale.

As a spurious prediction I'd say we may see a promising start with the usual drop-off over the next few months and sales figures that would make anyone proud but that are still lower than expected, a bit like Super Mario Galaxy.

If Sumabura [Super Smash Bros. Brawl] doesn't sell that well it would be proof positive that the Wii isn't a hard-core friendly platform. I suspect already that it isn't, but a title like this could prove it once and for all.

Not being hard-core friendly is one thing, but Barnett asserts that he believes that hard-core titles won't work on the Wii.

This also means the Wii is out of the "console war". It has its own market distinctly different from its competitors, whom must fight amongst themselves for their own top spot. Both Microsoft and Sony are making wooing noises to the casual market but they'll...
