212w ago - Korean company LG wants Sony's PlayStation 3 and Bravia televisions banned in the US for what it claims are patent infringements relating to Blu-ray playback.

To quote from EuroGamer: "The Foss Patents blog contacted Eurogamer to reveal documents filed with the US International Trade Commission in Washington relating to the complaint. mThe ITC has the power to block imports of products that violate US patents.

LG claims Sony is infringing four of its patents in a complaint that broadly relates to "certain electronic devices having a Blu-Ray Disc player and components thereof", but the PlayStation 3 (Model No. CECH-2501A) is the only Sony product to be specifically named in the main document of the complaint.

A Bloomberg reports suggests LG's claims are revenge for cases brought against it by Sony in December. Sony claims the Seoul-based company is infringing seven of its patents relating to LG phones. Sony has also filed a civil lawsuit against LG Blu-ray players.

227w ago - Sony's Q2 2010 sales data financial results for the quarter ending September 2010 have arrived with PlayStation 3 up and PSP slowing down.

Despite a fifty percent drop in PlayStation Portable hardware sales, the company's finances are looking good with Sony raising its full-year profit forecast citing demand for video games and computers according to Bloomberg.com.

To quote from Examiner.com (linked above): "Sony's PS3 has also closed the gap in worldwide sales against Microsoft's Xbox 360.

WorldWide Sales:

•Xbox 360: 44.5 million
•Sony PS3: 41.6 million

While both figures are impressive, Sony has had a stronger 2010 than Microsoft with over 8.1 million PS3s sold compared to Microsoft's 5.8 million Xbox 360s. Microsoft currently has a strong grasp on sales in North America, but Sony is selling well in Japan, while PAL regions the race is still close.

230w ago - According to Gamersmint.com (linked above), Sony has now succeeded in banning sales of the PSJailBreak PS3 modchip USB device in Europe.

This news comes just days after document leaks and UKIE support for Sony's swift legal action were announced.

To quote: "Sony has finally succeeded in banning the selling of the modchip in Europe.

After releasing a security firmware update which made the PSJailbreak useless, Sony has gone 1up now and the Japanese manufacturer has cut the grass from under the feet of prospective hackers through an order which makes it illegal to sell the modchip and all its clones in Europe.

This news has been confirmed by ChipSpain, one of the leading modchip online retailers who have taken off their stock of the PSJailbreak from their website following this recent order.

242w ago - Today IGN (linked above) reports that Sony has confirmed the PS3 shortage is officially over, with sales up 85 percent over last year.

According to NPD, the PlayStation 3 console moved 305k units in June, up from 165k units in June of 2009.

Additionally, Sony noted that there are nearly 13 million PS3 units in living rooms across the U.S. and that hardware unit sales are up 85 percent since June 2009 and 42 percent since January 2010.

To quote: "PS3 inventory issues have been resolved and June 2010 marks the 11th consecutive month of year on year growth for the platform," the company said in a statement.

"Video games are fueling new innovation for the entire consumer entertainment category and today's numbers are a testament to the big impact we'll play this holiday," said Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA.
