Game Over for Graphics Cards? 250°
September 22, 2008 // 1:50 am - Spare a thought for AMD and NVIDIA. They have been happily smacking each other upside the head for a decade. But at least they have been doing so safe in the knowledge that their GPUs are distinct from - and inherently superior in graphics processing terms - to CPUs.

At least, that used to be the case. Intel has now unveiled Larrabee, a co-processor based on an entirely new approach to graphics processing. If Intel has done its sums correctly, not only will the very deļ¬nition of the GPU be unceremoniously defenestrated, but also AMD and NVIDIA's graphics chips could even be pummelled...

Will DVD Size Limitations Affect the Graphics of Xbox 360 Games? 50°
August 10, 2008 // 8:30 pm - From the beginning of time, Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers have been dueling about who's console is the more graphically powerful. In these skirmishes, terms like CPU, GPU, and RAM have been thrown around, but now those folks on the PS3 side of the fray have another weapon in their arsenal: disc format.

You may think that disc size has absolutely nothing to do with graphical quality of games. It all has to do with the raw power of the console's CPU, RAM, etc., you might say; the discs are just used to store the data that is pushed through the processors. Yes, but no. Let me explain.

Intel Unveils Graphics Chip Line 50°
August 5, 2008 // 5:23 am - As the article goes.. Intel has unveiled details of the chip that will spearhead its move into computer graphics. It has revealed blueprints for the Larrabee chip that is scheduled to first appear in finished products in late 2009 or early 2010. Larrabee will be a stand-alone graphics processor unlike the onboard chips it produces for many PC makers.

The move will bring Intel into direct competition with graphics specialists Nvidia and the ATI division of AMD. Intel is aiming to put Larrabee into graphics cards for PCs that help show games and video in very high detail. Like existing...

PS3 Graphics Chip Shrinks to 65nm this Fall 100°
June 26, 2008 // 11:31 pm - Kotaku are reporting that as part of Sony's "cost down efforts," the PlayStation 3 will be getting smaller, cooler, cheaper, more efficient 65nm RSX graphics chips starting this fall.

Kaz Harai noted in his corporate strategy speech earlier today that the Cell processor has been manufactured with 65nm process technology as of "last holiday."

Both were originally manufactured at 90nm, which was charming at first, but now seems rather vulgar. We're updating our console power consumption charts in anticipation of the new RSX's release.

Next-Gen Games: To HD or not to HD? 50°
May 20, 2008 // 3:54 pm - With the Playstation 2 and the first Xbox being able to run select games in high definition, for example Grand Turismo 4 supported 1080i resolution. One would expect that in the age of 'next generation' consoles, the age of 1080p resolutions, that all games would, as a standard, support high definition.

Well it would appear that is not the case, with an increasing number of recent titles outputting native resolutions of lower than 720p. Such games are then up-scaled to meet this high-definition benchmark. On the one hand, what's the point of paying for 1080p TVs, consoles and...

Wii60 Graphics on the way from Developers? 50°
May 19, 2008 // 5:30 pm - No matter which way you cut the cheese, the Wii has been a huge success for Nintendo. Sales for the little white box of joy have been extremely impressive, and it isn't uncommon for some Aussie retailers to witness 'Wii droughts' due to the console rapidly disappearing off the shelves like Hotcakes, or Tickle Me Elmo, or some yet-to-be-recalled anatomically correct Barbie doll.

Immense console sales are all well and good for the bean counters and the Nintendo money bin, but when it comes to game titles the Wii has a fatal flaw: 3rd party shovelware and the piss-poor graphics...

Player vs. Everything: Choking on graphics 100°
May 3, 2008 // 10:21 pm - I managed to get my hands on an Age of Conan BETA key this morning, so off I went to excitedly download the client. I'm a big fan of Robert E. Howard's original pulps, and I've been looking forward to the grim and gritty world of Hyboria for a while now.

Most of what I've read about it so far has been very positive (with a few notable exceptions due to some of the design choices). Our own write-up of the overall BETA experience from Michael Zenke was very encouraging with regard to the combat, gameplay, and feel of the world. Overall, it seems like there's a lot to be excited...
