Microsoft Confident of Second Place Finish this Generation

Microsoft Confident of Second Place Finish this Generation 50°
339w ago - Don Mattrick, senior vice-president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, has said he expects the XBox 360 to secure second place in the current generation console war.

"We will sell more consoles this generation than Sony," Mattrick told Business Week.

He made the comments as Microsoft announced it was slashing the price of all three of its Xbox 360 models in the US, having recently done so in Japan also. As a result of the move, the entry level Xbox 360 Arcade is now priced at $199, making it the cheapest of the current generation of consoles on the market.

However, Mattrick said he was less confident of the Xbox 360 catching this generation's current market leader, Nintendo's Wii.

"I'm not at a point where I can say we're going to beat Nintendo," he said.

It's D-Day for Take-Two Interactive

It's D-Day for Take-Two Interactive 50°
339w ago - Yesterday's session featured some strange exchanging of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. (TTWO) shares, just one day before the company is set to release earnings.

There was no news released, though Barron's later said that the price decline was due to rumors about Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS) walking away from merger talks. ERTS had an executive speak at a conference right around noon.

Below is a graph of TTWO's trades between about 11:15 and 12:05, when shares declined sharply, rebounded sharply, and then settled roughly 5% lower than where they opened.

As the stock crossed $24 about eight minutes into the graph, the first pickup in volume can be seen, possibly by stop-limit orders being triggered. The price continued to slide on light volume until shares broke through $23, when volume accelerated to over 50,000 shares per minute.

As the shares dropped below $22, volume topped 150,000 shares per minute, which is impressive, considering only 500,000 shares traded during all of Friday and only 1.3 million exchanged hands yesterday.

Frantic selling and buying took place over the following ten minutes, as about 1.3 million shares were traded. It seems as though stop-limit orders first were triggered, panic selling ensued, and finally, as the stock sat at $22, buyers...

Resident Evil: Degeneration Headed to Blu-ray; First Details 100°
339w ago - Sometime in December or at the latest January, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release the first Resident Evil all-CGI movie on Blu-ray Disc, day-and-date with DVD and PSP.

Sony describes what will be the fourth Resident Evil film as follows:

The "Umbrella Incident" that took place in Raccoon City was ended with the eradication of the deadly virus by a missile attack ordered by the government. As its operations were suspended on a global scale, Umbrella Corporation stock plummeted. This serious blow to the business giant resulted in its complete dissolution.

7 years later, at an airport somewhere in the United States. An ordinary autumn afternoon. One zombie is unleashed into this peaceful scene to attack everyone. In the airport starting to fill up with the undead, the horrific disaster is about to be repeat itself...

We've got early Blu-ray specs and extra features to share which include a nod to Resident Evil 5 on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. In addition to a 1.78:1 1080p video transfer and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio, expect the following:

- Interactive Picture-in-Picture (Blu-ray exclusive)

Operate Your Computer with Wii Controllers

Operate Your Computer with Wii Controllers 50°
340w ago - Nintendo doesn't exactly advertise it, but the remotes for the Wii gaming console (including the balance board that comes with Wii Fit) have Bluetooth capabilities.

That means you can connect your Wii peripherals to your computer to operate the media center hooked up to your TV, play emulated games with a Nunchuk, Classic Controller, or even a Balance Board, and pretty much have them do anything you can do with a keyboard. Let's walk through linking up your Wii peripherals and putting them in control of your Mac, PC, or Linux box.

To give you an idea of what you can do with a Wii/PC hook-up, here's a look at one neat example: Controlling Windows Media Center from a distance, without having to shell out for a separate remote control.

Sony: LittleBigPlanet User-Generated Content is Region Specific

Sony: LittleBigPlanet User-Generated Content is Region Specific 300°
341w ago - LittleBigPlanet players will not be able to download levels created by players in other global territories, Sony confirmed to CVG.

During a presentation of the game at the Leipzig Games Convention today Sony's Pete Smith, who oversees operations at LBP developer Media Molecule, revealed that levels published on PSN by players will only be downloadable by people in the same region. So we'll not be able to download levels created by Japanese and US gamers.

The reason, he explained, is because each territory will have it's own dedicated server to which levels are uploaded.

"We've got regional servers," explained Smith. "But we can move levels around on servers whenever we want. But you won't have access to the Japanese servers," he added.
