PlayStation 2 Not Dead Yet, Still Playing Games and 50M Strong!

PlayStation 2 Not Dead Yet, Still Playing Games and 50M Strong! 50°
320w ago - The Associated Press reports that Sony's PS2 console has just sold 50 million units in North America. To date, Sony still has total faith in the system and commented they do not plan to do away with it any time soon.

To quote: The Sony PlayStation 2 debuted in 2000, before the beginning of the Bush administration, when Google Inc. was still a private search startup and the iPod and Windows XP hadn't been born. Yet despite its age in a business obsessed with the new, the video game console remains a big seller today.

In fact, Sony Corp. announced Tuesday that it has sold 50 million PlayStation 2 units in North America.

Microsoft Corp., meanwhile, has already discontinued the original Xbox, which launched a year after Sony's PS2. According to the most recently available figures From The NPD Group, which tracks U.S. sales only, Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft sold 14.5 million of those Xbox consoles.

Nintendo Co.'s GameCube, another PS2 competitor, sold 12 million units in the country. NPD puts U.S.-only sales of the PS2 through November at 43 million.

Sony Chart Reminds Gamers of the PlayStation 3's Offerings

Sony Chart Reminds Gamers of the PlayStation 3's Offerings 100°
320w ago - An external SCEA PR rep has told Edge-Online why a chart (below) was released by Sony indicating that the PS3 was cheaper than Microsoft's XBox 360 and Nintendo's Wii console.

The rep noted that it was thought to be a good time to remind everyone of "our strong offerings".

To quote: An external SCEA PR rep From The agency Porter Novelli told us the company released the chart because they "thought it would be a good time just to remind everyone of our strong offerings," which automatically implies that they feel people have either forgotten about the PS3's inherent value or never seriously considered the PS3's value, due to the higher price tag.

It's highly likely that amidst this PS3 price-drop rumoring that Sony wanted to tell the core audience, "Hey, don't wait for a drop, it's a steal at $399, honest."

I'd argue that today PS3 is a fine value, on par with Xbox 360, particularly for gamers in 2009, when it appears that Sony's internal developers will really begin to bear fruit.

Nevertheless, I'm glad I'm not the one that has to figure out how to get that value message across to consumers.

Fallout 3 Patch Causing Saved Game Problems for PlayStation 3

Fallout 3 Patch Causing Saved Game Problems for PlayStation 3 50°
320w ago - Although the Fallout 3 1.10 patch fixes a larger number of bugs and glitches, reports have been coming into us from gamers (as well as the official forums) that it's also introduced some new problems, most commonly on the PS3 console.

After applying the patch, some players' saved games have been reported to be missing items - including but not limited to keys for important locations, on random occasions. Furthermore, some gamers have noticed that the game has an increased chance of freezing after loading an area.

There also appears to be some problems with using old save files on the PS3 from before the patch on very rare occasions, In some rare instances, the old save files will not allow the player to save nor auto-save, because the start screen has the "Save" option darkened after the patch is applied, making it impossible to save with the old save files.

Thankfully, this only seem to occur with saved files before the patch, and infrequently. So far, there is no known fix other than deleting the patch from the "Game Data Utility" and starting the game without installing the patch.

We'll inform you if/when when a proper fix becomes available!

US Gamer Kills Mother and Injures Dad Over Halo 3 Addiction

US Gamer Kills Mother and Injures Dad Over Halo 3 Addiction 350°
320w ago - A US teenager killed his mother and wounded his father in revenge after they took away his violent computer game, a judge has ruled.

The defence team for Daniel Petric, 17, had argued his addiction to the Halo 3 game, in which players shoot invading aliens, had made him insane.

But the judge rejected this, saying he had planned revenge for weeks. Petric, of Ohio, was tried as an adult and faces a maximum possible penalty of life in prison without parole.

On the night of the shooting in October 2007, Petric used his father's key to open a lockbox and remove a 9mm handgun and the game, the court heard.

His father Mark, who was shot in the head and survived, testified that his son came into the room and asked: "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you."

He said he expected a pleasant surprise. Then his head went numb from the gunshot.

The Associated Press news agency reports that Microsoft, which owns the intellectual property for the game, declined to comment beyond a statement saying: "We are aware of the situation and it is a tragic case."
