Sony Unveils New Black Friday PS3 Slim Bundle Deals 200°
275w ago - Sony's Senior Vice President of Sales Tim Bender has revealed some new Black Friday PS3 Slim bundle deals on the PlayStation Blog.

To quote: I'm going to kick this off by introducing myself to all of you since I'm a relatively new addition to the PlayStation team.

I'm Tim Bender the new head of sales at SCEA and I'm thrilled to be joining the company at such an exciting time and even more excited to be sharing with you some of the enticing deals we've got planned this Friday.

While recent sales momentum is proving that PS3 on its own is a deal many of you could not pass up, we've been working hard with our retail partners to offer incomparable incentives and value options this holiday.

This Friday, across many of your favorite local retailers, you'll be able to find the new 120GB PS3 system packaged with a selection of this season's hottest games, and in some cases, the latest Blu-ray movie releases.

Keep in mind, the deals listed below are just the tip of the iceberg. Make sure to look in your Thursday papers to find other great deals from local favorites like Fry's, Hastings Entertainment, Nebraska...

TDK Unveils New 320GB 10-Layer Blu-ray Disc in Development

TDK Unveils New 320GB 10-Layer Blu-ray Disc in Development 400°
282w ago - TDK has recently unveiled a new 10-layer Blu-ray disc capable of 320GB of storage in development.

According to TDK, to quote: "It is possible to write and read data on and from the disc by using a blue-violet semiconductor laser with an oscillation wavelength of 405nm and an objective lens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.85, which are currently used for the Blu-ray disc."

This has been a trend in newer, higher-capacity Blu-Ray discs. Due to the proliferation of Internet connections everywhere and firmware being written to non-volatile (update-able) chips, it means that our PlayStation 3 consoles may simply be a firmware update away from reading these 10-layer behemoths of Blu-ray discs.

Sony Unveils PS3 Dev Kit for Academic Use

Sony Unveils PS3 Dev Kit for Academic Use 350°
294w ago - It looks like Sony is extending their support for schools and universities with courses geared towards computer engineering and programming.

At the Develop Conference 2009, SCEE R&D's Sarah Lemarie revealed that a PS3 dev kit designed for academic use is in the works.

To quote: "We have started a PS3 Academic Development Programme, and we're referring to the dev kits as mini-dev kits, which I can best describe as being in a closed beta stage at present," said Lemarie. "We'll be opening this beta up slowly."

"Of course universities can use Linux to program on the PS3 but I would really strongly recommend that if you are interested in the PS3 you look into this, as the experience you will get over Linux is quite incredible," she added.

The PS3 dev kit includes a consumer-sized PS3 with a low power function, two USB ports and a full SDK. Sony's cross-platform game engine PhyreEngine will also be made available as part of the program.

Sony has already provided academic institutions with PS2 and PSP dev kits in the past as part of their PlayStation-edu program.

E3 2009: Sony Finally Unveils PS3 Motion-sensing Controller

E3 2009: Sony Finally Unveils PS3 Motion-sensing Controller 500°
300w ago - Sony has finally shown off its potential Wii remote beater. They have demo'd a stick-like pad that has a 'magic ball' on the end, which is then picked up by the PlayStation Eye.

Jack Tretton claims it is the closest thing to real life on the market.

They are aiming for spring 2010 launch, and the prototype of the new controller showed a glowing sphere on the end of the stick. PS Eye tracks it.

The demonstration showed 1-to-1 motion control. On the screen, the controller became a racket in the guy's hand, changing into various other bits and bobs, such as swords and guns.

It has true 3D pointing too, and if you change angles to the camera it'll notice. In FPS mode, you can move and shoot but, will sometimes need buttons.

The ability to use two controllers is there as well, and with one in each hand you can play with building blocks, paint, use a sword and shield and fire virtual arrows.

When you move the camera follows you, should you drop down on one knee, for example.

To quote: The prototype of the unnamed device was demo'd live on-stage by its creators. The stick-like pad - which has a 'magic ball' on the end - is held in the gamer's hand, and then picked...
