Why the Xbox 360 was Forced to Launch First

50°
340w ago - In 2005 the Xbox 360 was launched in North America with a price point of $500 for the premium model and $400 for the "core" model. At this time the Xbox 360 was the only "next generation" console on the market, and it would stay like that for at least a year.

Originally, Sony was to launch their console, the PS3 in early 2006, however the console was delayed into November of 2006.

Weeks after launch many found flaws in the system and wondered why they were their. It seemed like many people forgot about Sony's original plan of releasing their console a few months after the 360 because they constantly refer to it has Microsoft's own greed to launch a year before the competition, although the competition was to launch just months after.

Later it was revealed that Microsoft had "skipped" some of the details when it came to the development of the Xbox 360, but why?

1. "Last Generation" Microsoft took second place to Sony, they didn't want a repeat of that so they decided to get a few months on them. To do this they of course had to skip certain details on their check list of things to do.

2. In mid 2005 NVIDIA, the developer of the Xbox's GPU ended production. Without a GPU Microsoft was unable to manufacture Xbox's to sell so they had to go...

Windows 7: What will it do? When will it launch? Here's the lowdown

100°
340w ago - Windows 7, the next version of Windows, is closer than you might think, with early copies already in the hands of OEMs and trusted partners. Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer demonstrated an early version of its user interface at the D6: All Things Digital conference in May but Steven Sinofsky - who took over Windows 7 after his success getting Office out of the door on time, time after time - is well known for keeping things close to his chest.

There's been very little solid information about just what's going to go into Microsoft's flagship OS, just plenty of speculation and rumour. So what can you expect from Windows 7? Here's what we predict...

1. Windows 7 won't be a from-the-ground up rewrite of Windows. Instead it'll be an evolution of the NT kernel as updated in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, according to Windows Product Manager Chris Flores. This will mean that applications should run without needing significant changes, and there will be an upgrade path from Windows Vista (though things will be harder for Windows XP users).

The rumoured "MinWin" kernel is most unlikely - though it's likely that there'll be lessons learned from Windows Server 2008's modular architecture, which Microsoft could use to offer a version of Windows 7 that runs on cheap...

Parents horrified at violent game launch on "family friendly" Wii

50°
341w ago - A new computer game tipped to be the most violent ever is being released exclusively on the so-called 'family friendly' Wii console.

Nintendo will dramatically transform Wii's image with the release of ultra violent video game MadWorld which "revolves around the themes of brutality and exhilaration", according to its creators.

Players in the 'hack and slash' game, which is due for a UK release in early 2009, can impale enemies on road signs, rip out hearts and execute them with weapons including chainsaws and daggers.

The decision to release a violent game on a console which has based its reputation on family fun has shocked anti-violence pressure groups.

The game has not yet been given an age rating. Mediawatch-UK, Britains longest running pressure group campaigning for decency in TV, films and games, said MadWorld will 'spoil' the Wii.

John Beyer, director of Mediawatch-uk, said: This game sounds very unsavoury. I hope the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) will view this with concern and decide it should not be granted a classification.

Without that it cannot be marketed in Britain. What the rest of world does is up to them. We need to ensure that modern and civilized values take priority rather than killing and maiming people.
