PS3 OtherOS & Linux to Remain in Old PS3s, No Security Hole 250°
August 27, 2009 // 5:53 pm - Today Sony's Satoshi Hashimoto, in an interview with Impress Watch, confirmed that Sony will not be removing the OtherOS and Linux functionality in old (non-Slim) PlayStation 3 consoles.

Until now, many feared Sony would remove the functionality from older PS3 systems via PS3 Firmware 3.0 or a future update.

Hackers Discuss Security, Nintendo Disabled Wii DVD Functionality 50°
January 11, 2009 // 12:03 am - During a Nintendo Wii security discussion, Team Twiizers revealed an undocumented processor, Nintendo's ticket scheme, and that Nintendo apparently knew the Wii was capable of DVD playback but opted to disable the functionality.

To quote: One thing that they discovered was a previously undocumented processor in Nintendo's game player. This tiny processor, dubbed "Starlet" by the team of hackers, was embedded on the Hollywood graphics chipset and was described as a "full-fledged NEC ARM system-on-a-chip."

Not even licensed Wii developers knew of the chip's existence...

Serious Security Flaw Found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 100°
December 16, 2008 // 8:12 pm - Users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer are being urged by experts to switch to a rival until a serious security flaw has been fixed.

The flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer could allow criminals to take control of people's computers and steal their passwords, Internet experts say. Microsoft urged people to be vigilant while it investigated and prepared an emergency patch to resolve it.

"Microsoft is continuing its investigation of public reports of attacks against a new vulnerability in Internet Explorer," said the firm in a security advisory alert about the flaw.

Hackers Bamboozled by PlayStation Portable 3000 Security 300°
November 4, 2008 // 12:55 am - Hexus (linked above) is reporting that hackers are 'bamboozled' by the security on the PSP-3000. They discuss whether a hack will be found, and explore the possibility that Sony has won its battle against PSP piracy and homebrew.

To quote: It's still early days in the life of the PSP-3000, which was released approximately 3 weeks ago, but Sony will be happy to hear that hackers have so far failed to exploit the latest hardware revision.
