TikGames: The Making of Stick Man Rescue, Hits PSN Tomorrow

100°
162w ago - Today Howard Lehr at TikGames has shared details on the making of Stick Man Rescue, which will be hitting fans on PSN tomorrow.

To quote: Stick Man Rescue was born of a conversation with my 12-year old son, Colin. He had just discovered the freeware Pivot Stick Figure Animator and, like any 12-year-old boy would, he was using it to make hilarious death animations.

Given that game designers are perpetual 12-year-olds at heart, I joined in. This prompted visits to various stick man death websites which provided a surprisingly long-lasting source of giggles that attracted my younger son. Soon the three of us were pondering how to make stick deaths into a video game.

Dusting off my rusty programming and non-existent art skills, I co-opted my kids to start making animated gifs of stick deaths and created a prototype game bent on seeing how many of our most ridiculous ideas could be worked into it.

So, I had a prototype as you can see, but had a long way to go to turn it into something that could be useful for a real game design.

Working at a publisher and developer like TikGames has its advantages. First, there are a bunch of talented people around to help hone ideas into something that works. I enlisted the help of Adrian Ludley,...

To quote: Today we celebrate 15 Years of PlayStation, the gaming industry and most importantly, the PlayStation fan. It is an honor to officially kick off our celebration on the PlayStation.Blog with a retrospective journey and history lesson 15 years in the making.

The PlayStation, the PlayStation 2, the PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation 3 – these aren't just names to Sony gaming products – these are milestones in every gamers' coming of age story.

Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Killzone and God of War, aren't just clever titles to PlayStation classics – but defining moments in gaming history where PlayStation stands above the rest, delivering memorable experiences and jaw-dropping moments.

Sitting at PlayStation and being part of this amazing journey as a gamer and now working with the PlayStation team, I can't help but recollect my first encounter with Metal Gear Solid.

Within moments of popping in my PlayStation Underground disc, and booting the MGS demo – I knew right there and then what I wanted to do with my life....

Sony to Add Code Making PSP Games Unhackable for 60 Days

750°
249w ago - Today Gamasutra.com (linked above) have posted an extensive interview with Sony Computer Entertainment of America's Rob Dyer, who stated that SCEA is working on implementing code to make new PSP games unhackable for up to 60 days from release.

This news comes just months after Sony's recent effort to combat PlayStation Portable piracy through online registration requirements.

To quote: "A lot of the stuff that will be announced at E3 we're very excited about, because they are huge titles. And we also believe that there's a way that you will be able to, not stop, but slow down the piracy in the first 30 to 60 days from a tech perspective.

There's some code that you can embed that we've been helping developers implement in order to get people at least to see a 60-day shelf life before it gets hacked and it shows up on BitTorrent.

That's been the biggest problem, no question about it. It's become a very difficult proposition to be profitable, given the piracy right now. And the fact that the category shrunk inside of retail."

According to the trade, the two-hour Red Faction movie will be a potential pilot for TV series based on the franchise, which was itself partially inspired by the film Total Recall.

To quote: "It is the kind of content that fits our genre," senior VP of Syfy Ventures Alan Seiffert told B&C. "It is a great fit for a big Syfy Saturday movie, and if it really works, it is a great back-door pilot."

The deal will cut both ways, with future Red Faction games being co-produced by the SyFy Games label. According to the latest THQ financial report, Red Faction 4 has been moved up to arrive during the publisher's current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2011.

CEO Brian Farrell said the game's release had been advanced to capitalize on the popularity of the critically acclaimed Red Faction: Guerrilla and promised "robust online gameplay" and increased environmental destruction.

The network has also struck a deal with THQ to develop a DS, iPhone, and iPad game based on the upcoming reality show Ghost Hunters Academy.
