So say security professionals predicting what net criminals will turn to in 2008 to catch people out.

Bebo, Facebook, Meebo and Friendster have unveiled plans to help them become more than places to keep in touch.

Facebook founder apology over ads 50°
December 9, 2007 // 2:59 pm - The founder of social networking site Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has apologised to users for the way it launched a social advertising system.

Called Beacon, the system tracks web shopping on partner sites outside Facebook and then sells adverts to the social network based on purchases.

After complaints the site was invading privacy, Facebook changed Beacon from an opt-out system to opt in.

Mr Zuckerberg has said users can now switch off Beacon completely.

December 1, 2007 // 4:44 am - Facebook members have forced the social networking site to change the way a controversial ad system worked.

More than 50,000 Facebook users signed a petition calling on the company to alter or abandon its Beacon advertising technology.

When Facebook users shopped online, Beacon told friends and businesses what they looked at or bought.

Many considered the data sharing to be an intrusion that exposed them to more scrutiny than was comfortable.

Young warned over social websites 50°
November 23, 2007 // 4:05 am - Millions of young people could damage their future careers with the details about themselves they post on social networking websites, a watchdog warns.

The Information Commissioner's Office found more than half of those asked made most of their information public.

Some 71% of 2,000 14 to 21-year-olds said they would not want colleges or employers to do a web search on them before they had removed some material.

The commission said the young needed to be aware of their electronic footprint.

Google opens up social networking 50°

Developers currently have to customise their designs for a particular site with many partnering with the hugely popular Facebook.

Google's OpenSocial system will allow a wider distribution for tools like Facebook's music recommendation service iLike and its Top Friends application.

Microsoft buys stake in Facebook 50°
October 25, 2007 // 4:36 am - Microsoft has paid $240m (£117m) for a 1.6% stake in Facebook that values the hugely popular social networking site at $15bn (£7.3bn).
Facebook spurned an offer from Microsoft's rival Google, which was also keen to invest the site.

Microsoft will also sell internet ads for Facebook outside the United States as part of the deal that took several weeks of negotiating.

Microsoft already provides banner advertising and links on the US site.

Abuse fight targets social sites 50°
October 22, 2007 // 4:36 pm - Social networking sites are being urged to do more to protect young people.

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre (CEOP) wants the sites to install its "report abuse" button that connects people to police.

CEOP research shows some sex offenders are starting to use social network sites, such as MySpace, Bebo and Facebook, to seek out victims.

Jim Gamble, head of CEOP, says: "The more children go on social networks, the more offenders follow them."
