CNET: Why Sony Needs to Drop the Price of the PS3, but Can't

50°
322w ago - Today Don Reisinger of CNET wrote an article detailing how Sony needs to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 console, but just can't do it.

Sony's apparently unwilling to admit it, but with all the financial trouble, Sony is trying to turn a profit and limit losses in order to ensure shareholders happy.

Thus, Sony is keeping is the prices high but its not selling as many units as desired, however Sony is now finding out that it's not a good time to be a value leader instead of a cost leader in this difficult economic climate.

To quote: Sony knows this and although it's unwilling to admit it, the company seems to want to compete on price too. But with financial troubles unlike anything it has ever seen, Sony is trying to turn a profit and limit losses to keep shareholders happy.

In essence, Sony finds itself in a dangerous position: it needs to make money, so it wants to keep its prices high, but by doing so, it's not selling as many units and its goal of becoming profitable byway of the "value" argument simply isn't working. And as the recession deepens and consumers are looking to save money wherever possible, Sony is quickly finding out that it's not a good time to be the "value leader" instead of the "cost leader."

I truly believe Sony's gaming division...

Jack Thompson: Take-Two's Stock Woes Are an Act of God

300°
322w ago - When he's not leading a shareholder revolt, Jack Thompson is apparently a spokesman for God.

In a letter to Take Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick, the former attorney said that Take-Two's recent stock tumble is an act of God.

Thompson wrote: "As you will recall, when we met in New York for a couple of hours on May 15, 2007, I mentioned to you that unless Take-Two cleaned up its corporate act (stopped marketing and selling its Mature-rated games to minors), there would be a wicked price to pay.

Since then Take-Two's stock has gone from $26 to $7+ per share. I think God has put the world together in such a way that your company's wrongdoing has made this fiscal reckoning unavoidable. Scripture says so.

I have been your company's and its shareholders' best friend in all this since I appeared on 60 Minutes in the spring of 2005, but you chose to characterize me as your company's enemy, pledging to destroy me, and now the piper is being paid. God is not amused.

The harm you and your agents have done to me is predictable, as Jesus told his disciples: "The world hates you because it first hated me." I'll be fine, as God promises that "All things work to the good for those who love the Lord and are called according...

PlayStation Home: About Clubhouses, and the Not-PSP Interface

50°
322w ago - A quick interview with a rep from SCEA clarifies a few things about PlayStation Home. It won't change your life at Home, but it's a good read if you want to satisfy your curiosity.

Early on, Sony presented the virtual PSP as the navigation interface for PlayStation Home, but last month though, they revealed that this was no longer the case. SCEA explains:

We felt that PlayStation Home deserved its own navigation device, so we built a user interface that was dedicated to just that purpose. We have found the new user interface to generally be more intuitive for many of our users.

SCEA also clarified a few things about Clubhouses, in case you didn't already know about how it works:

A PlayStation Home user can be a member of up to five clubs (meaning they can be leaders or members of five clubs).

Every club has one leader (the owner who purchased the club [this costs $4.99]), up to four sub-leaders and up to 32 members.

In functionality, they work similarly to other personal spaces such as your apartment with some additional features such as a bulletin board where the leader, and optionally the sub-leaders, can leave messages for the whole club to read, such as tournament announcements or meeting times.

As with many aspects of PlayStation Home,...

322w ago - Amazon has reported record holiday sales despite the tough economic climate. Over 5.6 million units were shipped on its peak day of December 15th and the most popular products included the Nintendo Wii, the iPod, Acer notebooks and a 52" Samsung HDTV.

To quote: Internet retail giant Amazon.com reported record holiday sales on Friday, a rare good performance in one of the most dismal holiday shopping seasons in years.

The Seattle, Washington-based online store did not provide a breakdown of sales figures but said online orders reached record levels during the holiday shopping season for the 14th year in a row.

It said in a statement that more than 6.3 million items were ordered worldwide and 5.6 million units shipped on its peak day, December 15.

Amazon said it shipped items to more than 210 countries between November 14 and December 24 and more than 99 percent of its orders arrived in time for the holidays.

Amazon said best-selling holiday items this year included the Samsung 52-inch HDTV, the Apple iPod, the Acer netbook computer and Nintendo Wii.
