Game Lag: Five Steps to Reducing Lag in Online Video Games

Game Lag: Five Steps to Reducing Lag in Online Video Games 400°
320w ago - Tired of pulling a trigger in Call of Duty: World at War, then watching your gun fire five seconds later? Sick of adrenaline-fueled Halo 3 matches playing out like slide-shows?

Well, the GamePro editors have five secret tips to help you reduce or eliminate lag, and make online gaming more stable and enjoyable.

Without further ado, here are five proven ways to fix a laggy game experience!

1. Shut down all PC downloads and sharing apps.
File-sharing programs such as BitTorrent are infamous for eating up bandwidth, and will guarantee you a choppy online gaming experience on your game system.

Big downloads, such as Apple Store TV shows or movies, will also slow down your online game. If you're playing online, try to limit any PC Internet use beyond simple web browsing or e-mail.

2. Cable internet beats DSL every single time.
There's a reason a DSL connection costs less than cable internet: it's slower and less stable. In fact, some industry groups have recommended stripping DSL of its "broadband" label because it can only handle a fraction of the speed of a cable connection.

DSL is fine for speedy web browsing, but cable reigns supreme for online gaming. Cable internet is also relatively inexpensive if you're already a cable TV...

Sony Refuses PlayStation Brand on Sony Ericsson, No PSP Phone

Sony Refuses PlayStation Brand on Sony Ericsson, No PSP Phone 300°
320w ago - MobileToday (linked above) is reporting that there is no PSP phone as Sony refused Sony Ericsson to use the PlayStation brand after pitching to the board late last year.

Apparently there has been a fall out because of the refusal to use the PlayStation brand, so a PSP phone is looking far less likely now.

To quote: Sony is understood to have refused to allow Sony Ericsson the use of its PlayStation brand, after the handset manufacturer presented a pitch to the board late last year.

Sony Ericsson was planning to develop a PSP phone to capitalise on the growing success of the gaming sector, and after the success of Cyber-shot and Walkman handsets.

Sources said the refusal to sanction the brand on the handsets in December has prompted a fallout between Sony and the mobile phone joint venture.

Several sources close to the matter claimed Sony executives told colleagues at Sony Ericsson that it would only license the PlayStation brand if and when Sony makes handsets independently - effectively pushing for an exit From The joint venture with Ericsson.

Sony PSP Survery: Touchscreen, Bluetooth & Integrated Storage

Sony PSP Survery: Touchscreen, Bluetooth & Integrated Storage 100°
320w ago - A new Sony survey regarding consumer interests has mentioned touchscreen, bluetooth and integrated storage possibilities for the PSP.

To quote: If you want to have an idea of what Sony is planning for their next iteration of the PSP, this recent consumer survey might be a good place to start.

The questionnaire asks the public if they're interested in features like Bluetooth, integrated storage, GPS, TV tuning, better file connectivity with the PS3, a touchscreen, improved battery life and speedier load times. Is there any way to just circle all of the above?

It would seem that Sony, able to do all of these things with the PSP, would like to select only those options that will prove the most enticing to companies and profitable for the company.

Fair enough, but with every lame PSP update that's made, I think we all get a little less excited about the platform. Oh, and games, Sony. We want games.

Sony Justifies Pre-Order-Only Killzone 2 Demo, Dates PSN Version

Sony Justifies Pre-Order-Only Killzone 2 Demo, Dates PSN Version 50°
320w ago - Sony has attempted to justify its policy in North America where gamers will only get the KillZone 2 demo if they pre-order the game.

MTV Multiplayer received this response from Scott Steinberg, vice president of product marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America:

Offering a playable demo to motivate preorders speaks to our confidence in the appeal of a game such as Killzone 2. We take this approach when we are convinced that the experience will cement a consumer's interest in purchasing.

Retailers will then merchandise those demos within their stores and online to maximize their visibility. Through this process, consumers are often times able to reserve their copy of the final game, which provides an incentive to purchase and helps seal the deal.

We also offer demos on the PSN, which we have done in the past with great success, and will continue to make that available. Killzone 2, for example, will have a downloadable demo launch in North America the week that the game is launching, for consumers who prefer that option.

And what if you don't pre-order "Killzone 2″ but want to try the demo? It's slated for release as a download from the PlayStation Network on PS3 for Thursday, February 26, a day before the game's official release date. That...
