Sony Details Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 3: What We Know

400°
87w ago - Sony Social Media Manager Sid Shuman shared some new details on Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 3 today, as follows:

Los Santos is the biggest Grand Theft Auto city yet... and even that is an understatement. Spanning the city of Los Santos and the wide-open countryside of Blaine County, GTA V is larger than Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and the frontier world of Red Dead Redemption combined. What's more, it will all be fully open for you to explore from the very start of the game.

Three is the magic number

For the first time in a Grand Theft Auto game, you're not just playing as one character, but three - each with their own individual personalities and lives to live. You'll get to play missions as one character, combinations of two, and sometimes all three.

When you're not out on a mission, you can switch between these three leads in real time using the character wheel. While you're controlling one character, the other two will carry on with their daily lives, so you'll never know what you'll find the other characters getting up to when you jump between them.

Michael is an ex-bank robber, living a comfortable life under the witness protection programme thanks to a deal he made with the FIB (the game's version of...

Hands on with The Last of Us on PlayStation 3: Whatever It Takes

50°
93w ago - Sony Social Media Manager Sid Shuman went hands on today with The Last of Us on the PlayStation 3 entertainment system.

Below are the details, to quote: I'm low on ammo, so I clumsily swing my two-by-four at the incoming Clicker - dumb move. The creature sinks its fetid teeth into my jugular, chirping with malevolent glee as it rips out a gobbet of flesh. Arterial blood spurts across my face, now contorted in shock and agony.

I'm dead. This time, I try a different approach. I combine one of my remaining rags and a precious bottle of alcohol to create a Molotov cocktail, then hurl it towards the abomination. Flames envelop the lumbering shape as it wails and collapses, dead at last. I'm alive - for a little while longer.

The Last of Us isn't afraid to kill you, over and over if need be. And that's a big part of its considerable charm. As you struggle to survive the game's inhospitable world, limping from one nail-biting combat scenario to the next, you'll feel strangely alive and alert.

In an era of game development that - at least to this old-timer - tends to babysit players with tutorials and handholding to dial down any chance of frustration, this game's unapologetically tough-as-nails approach feels both refreshing and quietly revolutionary. Remember when games used...

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct PS3 Out Now, What We Learned

50°
102w ago - Terminal Reality Creative Director Drew Haworth has announced that The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct for PS3 is out now with details below.

To quote: When we became aware of The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct opportunity with Activision and AMC, we leapt on it. We devised a first-person survival-horror strategy approach and pitched it.

Our game was planned as a labor of love: an endeavor to create a relatively intimate The Walking Dead game experience for fans like us... as well as players new to the series who were looking for a different type of zombie game. Our goal was to create an authentic and compelling experience worthy of the name.

Since then, of course, Telltale has released all the amazing episodes of their deserved Game of the Year, and AMC's series has consistently shattered broadcast television records! So while 'pressure' may be an understatement, we've stayed the course.

And Activision and AMC have been steadfast, wonderful partners in us making the game we set out to make in the first place: a new type of zombie game experience for players that want to take on The Walking Dead's world for a while!

Here are some of the lessons the team learned while developing The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, which is out today on PS3!
I was skeptical,...

Sony on What's New in Rocketbirds: Hard Boiled Chicken for PS Vita

50°
117w ago - Today Sony Producer and Studio Head Sian Yue Tan has shared what is new in Rocketbirds: Hard Boiled Chicken for PS Vita, which is taking flight in 2013.

Below are the details, to quote: It's my pleasure to tell you that Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken is coming to the PS Vita in the first quarter of 2013!

Rocketbirds, our cinematic platform adventure game, has come a long way from its three IGF finalist nominations back in 2010. Since then, we listened to people's feedback and vastly improved the game for its PS3 release in October 2011.

That version had more technical improvements than we could shake a stick at; we made it fast and included stereoscopic 3D, added a new Jet Pack mode, a two-player couch co-op campaign and polished the heck out of it.

We received more great feedback, so when it came down to the PS Vita version, we jumped at the opportunity to iterate on the game once more. We added things like new chapters, puzzles and humor; a unique new Hardboiled difficulty setting; improvements to the controls to utilize the PS Vita's unique features; and improved connectivity for the cooperative campaign.

From the beginning, I've really wanted to include...

Marvel Announces X-Men Arcade is Coming Tomorrow to PSN

200°
220w ago - Today Marvel Studios Licensed Games Manager Chris Baker has announced that X-Men Arcade is coming Tomorrow to PSN.

To quote: Joining Marvel Pinball on the PlayStation Network this Tuesday, X-Men Arcade holds a special place in my Marvel-loving heart and even helped shape my knowledge of the Marvel Universe at a fairly young age.

OK, so maybe it was off in a few ways - and that's what I'm counting down here today.

X-Men Arcade holds up as one of the greatest beat-'em-up games of its era, and if you were a fan of it when it came out, I think you'll agree that the 18-year wait for a console version was definitely worth it... but not only for gameplay fun and nostalgia.

A big part of the game's charm playing it now is something we didn't really think twice about back in 1992 - powers that went beyond characters' capabilities, laughable in-game dialogue, and other oddities, for example.

In other words, the kinds of things that the person with my job at Marvel would strike down in a game design document...
