Hands-on with Upcoming PSN Shooter Dead Nation for PS3

50°
239w ago - Sony Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman has shared some hands-on details of the upcoming PSN shooter Dead Nation for the PS3 entertainment system.

To quote: I was itching to get my mitts on Dead Nation, the upcoming PSN shooter from the creators of Super Stardust HD. Luckily, I got some extensive play time from last week's NYC PlayStation media day. Here's what I learned.

You can upgrade your guns... a lot. Dead Nation's environments are dotted with fenced-in "safe zones" that give you a chance to catch your breath and buy supplies from a nearby gun shop.

In addition to buying health and ammo, you can purchase mods that will enhance your various weapons in different ways, depending on the gun. The mods upgrade stats such as damage, ammo capacity, firing rate, reload time, and range.

While the most potent weapon upgrades are expensive, you can pop open car trunks and chests found through the environments in order to collect cash and other useful items.

The Shotgun is devastating. The Dead Nation build I played featured three weapons – the Shotgun, SMG, and Rifle – with more to come in the final version. Early on, I decided to pour my money into repeatedly upgrading the Shotgun's damage and spread capability.

The results...

Video: Hands-on with PixelJunk Shooter 2 for PlayStation 3

239w ago - Sony's Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman has shared a hands-on video today spotlighting PixelJunk Shooter 2 for the PlayStation 3 entertainment system.

Q-Games and Dylan Cuthbert are cooking up plenty of new tricks for PixelJunk Shooter 2, the follow-up to the 2009 PSN title that mixed retro-styled audio-visuals with progressive gameplay mechanics.

But once I picked up the controller at last week's NYC PlayStation media day, I discovered that PixelJunk Shooter 2 expands upon this formula in several key ways.

Light and dark. I quickly learned that darkness is not your friend in PixelJunk Shooter 2. Traveling though a dark area for more than a few seconds will attract invulnerable apparitions - the spectral remnants of a "lost civilization" – and almost instant death.

Faced with a long, shadowy tunnel, I turned my cannons on a nearby phosphorescent mushroom. While it bobbed like a metronome, I was able to stay within its small orb of light to pass through the tunnel unscathed.

That's when I discovered another threat lurking in the darkness: worm-like parasites that latched onto my ship's hull and slowed my movement to a crawl. Once exposed to light, the worms...

PlayStation Move Hands-on: Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition for PS3

239w ago - Today Sony's Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman has shared a hands-on PlayStation Move preview of Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition for PS3.

To quote: At last week's PlayStation event in NYC, I was pleased to see Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition make an appearance – complete with the new PlayStation Move control scheme.

I grabbed a PlayStation Move and a Navigation Controller and dove into a combat sequence several chapters into the game. Several details quickly became apparent:

Aiming is much, much easier. I was able to pop headshots, even at long ranges, with impressive accuracy using the PlayStation Move's reticule aiming. You move your character with an analog stick (via the Navigation Controller or a DualShock 3), then squeeze the trigger on the PlayStation Move to draw your weapon. Once your shot is lined up, you press the Move button with your thumb to fire the shot. Easy!

From what I played, the new PlayStation Move aiming controls will be a big help to players who had difficulty adjusting to Resident Evil 5's default analog stick control scheme.

Knifing is easier, too. In the original version of Resident Evil 5, swinging your knife was...

Video: Toy Story 3 PS3 Hands-on with Zurg and PlayStation Move

250w ago - Sony's Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman is back with another fresh video today highlighting Toy Story 3 for PS3, covering both a hands-on with Zurg and also a PlayStation Move update.

To quote: We got a chance to play as Zurg in the game's open-world, highly customizable Toy Box mode.

Distinct from the Story Mode, Toy Story 3's Toy Box mode is a standalone sandbox that enables you to build a town and populate it with whatever landmarks, characters, and missions you'd like.

When playing as Buzz, Woody, or Jessie, there's plenty to do: mine for gold, take on side quests, race in various vehicles, beat down baddies, and compete in challenges.

The reward is more gold and, by extension, more unlockable toys and buildings for your custom town. Get a peek at Toy Box mode in the video below.

Enter Zurg. Formally introduced in Toy Story 2 as a villain and arch-nemesis to Buzz Lightyear, Zurg is a Vader-esque bad toy who possesses enormous offensive power compared to the milder, meeker Woody and team.

Once you buy a special toy in the Toy Box mode, you can use it to transform your character into Zurg and begin a reign of destruction. Zurg is...

Video: TGS 2009: Hands-on with Bayonetta for PlayStation 3

283w ago - Today JoyStiq posted a video (below) from Tokyo Game Show 2009 showcasing Bayonetta for PlayStation 3.

To quote from their synopsis on the PS3 title: "Centered on the exploits of an improbably posh witch and her fashionable pair of gun boots, Bayonetta feels like the result of designer Hideki Kamiya answering every development question with, "Sure, why not?"

The game's hyper excess occasionally veers into the distasteful - Bayonetta's clothing seems to come and go as it pleases - but it mostly leads to situations that feel creative and surprising.

Even a boss fight avoids routine by constantly changing pace: a battle on a bridge eventually becomes airborne after the whole structure is flung across the stage, and the ordeal isn't over until after a brief chase and a final showdown atop a winding set of stairs."
