Sony: PS3 In-Game XMB Being Worked On

50°
377w ago - When the 2.0 firmware update for PS3 was finally released, many users were disappointed over the fact that the update did not include in-game XMB access as originally expected.

The good news is that we still may see in-game XMB packed in a future firmware update according to Sony marketing VP Peter Dille, to quote from the link above:

As far as in-game XMB access, we know it's a feature that's important to our consumers. Because PS3 packs so much advanced technology "under the hood," it takes some time to implement major, new functionalities, but we are working hard on addressing this feature, as well as continually expand the capabilities and functionalities of PS3.

We expect firmware updates to continue in 2008 and throughout the product's lifecycle as new technologies and enhancements become available.

Sony: The momentum of PS3 is not behind compared to PS2

50°
379w ago - Sony CEO Howard Stringer has suggested that the momentum of the PS3 going into the Christmas period is the same as it was with the Playstation 2. Stringer commented that it takes time to build a new format and the PS3 is not behind the PS2 in terms of its momentum curve.

To quote: "The momentum shift and the energy behind PS3 in time for Christmas is extremely fortuitous," he said. "It was planned by the PlayStation group, but I think this momentum now -- particularly the number of games coming out, including our own as well as third-party -- is the same as it was with PlayStation 2."

Noting that "it takes time to build a new format," Stringer insisted that PS3 is "not behind the curve compared to PlayStation 2 in terms of momentum. The amount of bandwidth and the processing power of Cell give game manufacturers a lot more work to do to use this system to its full benefit -- and it's taken awhile to do it. The same was true of PlayStation 2."

He said Sony was waiting for the $399 price tag "to see if, indeed, the loyal PlayStation customers -- and there are 200 million of them who have PS2 -- (would) kick in, and clearly the value proposition has sent the message."
