Xbox Outsells PS3's Global Figures in US Alone

Xbox Outsells PS3's Global Figures in US Alone 200°
355w ago - According to Joystiqs sources, Microsoft is cracking open the champagne. The Xbox 360's sales have topped the 10M in the US alone. That's well ahead of the Wii, which stands at 8.8M, and the PS3, which sold 4.1M.

Worldwide, Microsoft says it's sold 19M consoles total. That's behind the Wii's global sales of 25M units, but Microsoft isn't exactly content with second place it's making a point to say that the 360 has the "largest global install base of any current gen, high definition gaming console.".

Meanwhile, the PS3s doing quite nicely for itself as well in addition to outselling the 360 in both the US and Europe, Sony says worldwide sales were up an astounding 156 percent last year with a total of 9.2M units coming off shelves, and that it expects to sell another 10M consoles by March 2009.

Looks like it's going to be an interesting year in the console market.

I wonder if the Wii's novelty factor will continue, or if the PS3 can live up to it's potential.

Gran Turismo sales breeze past 50 million

Gran Turismo sales breeze past 50 million 200°
356w ago - Sony says that its Gran Turismo racing series has notched up 50 million sales across all PlayStation formats (except PSP though) in ten years and precisely four months.

"Initially, Gran Turismo was an 'alternative' racing game, kind of an outsider in the genre," said series creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

Kaz to his mates: "And we made it thinking that it would be okay as long as it reached out to the select few who would agree with us. So this figure, 50 million units, is simply astounding. If you go to a game store and look for a particular package, and pay for it at the cash register, though the time may be very brief, it still takes at least three minutes or so."

Stay with him... "It's simply mind boggling and hard to believe that this has been repeated 50 million times all around the world in the last ten years. I would really like to thank all the fans who have supported the Gran Turismo series over the years, for all their passion and love of the game.

We'd like to continue making every effort to create cutting edge, high quality games, so that we don't disappoint anyone's expectations."

Metal Gear Solid 4 to Punish Ninja Gaiden in Sales?

Metal Gear Solid 4 to Punish Ninja Gaiden in Sales? 50°
356w ago - Two agents of destruction (Ryu and Snake) seeking for retribution, set out in their quest to meet their destiny and conquer their fears in the month of June, but it seems Snake's saga is going to chip Ryu's "gaiden" (Japanese for the continuing saga) into a million pieces even prior to its release.

Sony did something similar with Heavenly Sword releasing it on September 12, two weeks before Halo 3 and although it was a new IP with excellent production values, it did not quite make the grade that it was expected to initially (in terms of sales).

It took the game a considerable amount of time to hit a million copies. Had Sony delayed the game till October it would have fared much better in the absence of Grand Theft Auto 4 which was due to be released in 2007 at that point of time.

Europe PS3 sales overtake X-Box 360

Europe PS3 sales overtake X-Box 360 50°
356w ago - Sony's PlayStation 3 games console has outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360 in Europe, according to figures released by Sony. More than five million PS3s have been sold across the continent, Sony's David Reeves confirmed.

Speaking at a European PlayStation event in London, he said: "The numbers are a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand."

He said PlayStation 3 had been outselling the Xbox 360 since October last year.

"We have sold more PlayStation 3's throughout Europe than Xbox 360 even though they launched 16 months before us."

Mr Reeves, head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, also said 12 million PSP handheld consoles and 48 million PlayStation 2s had been sold in Europe.

Blu-ray sales tank for good reasons

Blu-ray sales tank for good reasons 100°
356w ago - Blu-ray player sales are sucking wind as well they should. According to Cnet, sales of the DRM infected format players are dropping like rocks.

The not so bright people out there had expected sales to skyrocket once the format war was done, but it didn't. They thought was people would ignore the massive defects of Blu-ray and buy like the dumb sheep that they are, handcuffing themselves to the Sony bank account.

Surprise, it didn't happen. US consumers are still dumb sheep, but this time they are realizing what is being done to them and they aren't biting. Sony's hope of having 50% of disc sales this year be Blu-ray are more likely to happen because of falling DVD sales than rocketing Blu-ray.

The format has three problems, DRM infections, BD-J and greed. The greed part is obvious, Sony won the format war and are trying to charge people between 50 and 100% more for a product with marginally better quality. Sure, it looks better, and the 0.07% of people with 7.1 channel audio setups will be overjoyed, but for the rest, it is a small step at best over an upconverting DVD.

Are you going to buy the DVD version for $16.99 on new release sale or $29.99 for the BD? It doesn't take a genius to realize that the next iteration of Hollywood Formula #7 with Big Stars #3 and #8 isn't worth it....
