PlayStation 3 XMB Plus Open Source Equals Awesomeness

PlayStation 3 XMB Plus Open Source Equals Awesomeness 350°
326w ago - The PlayStation 3 can probably be considered one of the most customizable consoles on the market. With the ability to upgrade you HDD, use external USB devices, Bluetooth peripherals, install open source operating systems (Linux/Unix) and freely customize your own XMB theme, the PS3 gives users a freedom of choice that was never previously established in console gaming until this generation.

Not to say that it's really "open" in the sense where programmers, like myself, don't really have the ability to access any hardware acceleration in the RSX because of restrictions by a hypervisor (software systems that run directly on the PS3 as a hardware control and guest operating system monitor) in the available Linux/Unix flavors; this limits any 3D operations that can be done on the PS3 whilst running Linux.

But gamers don't really need to worry about crap like that. That's reserved more for the bewildered geeks that get a stiffy trying to comprehend the internal workings of any system - let alone the PS3.

But what if Sony took off the shackles currently limiting user control of the PS3? What if Sony decided to give users the ability to fully customize and control their interactivity and interface?

To finally change that sonata chime at startup to something more you (not...

PlayStation 3 Home Open BETA Plans Detailed by Home Manager

PlayStation 3 Home Open BETA Plans Detailed by Home Manager 200°
329w ago - PlayStation Home Community Manager TedTheDog has outlined a rough overview of the coming weeks leading up to the launch of the PlayStation 3 Home Open Beta. Details are as follows:

To quote: Excited? Me too

Frustrated? Sorry, but not long now.

Here's a rough overview of the coming weeks:

1. The version 1.0 Patch Notes will be published in the closed beta forum so they know what to expect and to help plan testing.

2. A couple of days later Version 1.0 will be released into the Closed beta. That will not happen this week.

3. SCEE will be inviting a large number of extra testers into the closed beta to load test and that process will start within a day or so of v1.0 going live. We wont invite them all straight away, we'll ramp it up over a a period of time. We will be inviting non-English speaking testers for the first time.

Languages covered will be English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. Please remember these are languages, not countries, so more than the immediately obvious countries will be included to a degree. The lists have been chosen already, dont try changing your language to get included!

4. Once we start inviting people in to the Closed Beta the public SCEE Home forums will become the Home beta test...

The New XBox Experience Preview Program Sign-Ups Open

The New XBox Experience Preview Program Sign-Ups Open 50°
332w ago - Per Major Nelson today: I know that many of you are excited to get your hands on the New Xbox Experience, which will go live all Xbox LIVE regions wide on November 19th.

Well, we're just as excited to as you are so I am happy to announce that I've been working on a little project that I think may interested you.

Working with various teams across Xbox, we've developed a program to allow a select few of you early access to NXE. How do you get chosen? The first step is to head on over to Microsoft Connect, sign in with your Windows LIVE ID and join the "Xbox 360 Fall 2008 Preview Program" by clicking on this link.

Once you do that, you need to fill out the "Xbox 360 Fall Flash Preview Sign Up" survey in order to be considered for receiving the Preview System Update.

We're asking a few questions about where you live, your home network, ISP connection and a few other pieces of information. We are looking for a good cross-section of our members in order to get the best feedback we can.

Next Killzone 2 BETA to be Even More Open to the Public

Next Killzone 2 BETA to be Even More Open to the Public 100°
334w ago - Killzone 2, the highly anticipated new shooter from Guerilla Games, is currently in its second BETA phase. I contacted Yvonne Von Berg to talk about the possibility of acquiring a BETA key to write an impressions preview.

Her response wasn't what I hoped for, but I found out some important info regarding the third phase of the games BETA testing. Yvonne Says:

"Good Morning Paddy,

The current beta testing phase, is the second of three and is not open to the public; phase three will be a lot more open so please keep an eye on our forums and www.killzone.com for news,

Kind regards,

Yvonne Von Berg"

So keep active on Killzone.com and their forums to have a chance at getting into the third phase of the BETA, and hopefully an opportunity to destroy the Helghast menace before the games release in 2009.

More info soon on Killzone 2's trophys and gameplay features as it develops.

PlayStation 3 Home Open BETA Not Coming with Firmware 2.50

PlayStation 3 Home Open BETA Not Coming with Firmware 2.50 200°
335w ago - Home Community Manager "TedTheDog" has clarified statements he made last month on the US Home BETA forums. In regards to a specific bug, Ted said the bug will be fixed in Firmware update 2.5.

"2.5 is what we're waiting for and 'October' is what I've heard, later October is my guess." He goes on make a statement that would seem to indicate Home 1.0 will be arriving at the same time.

Not the case, Ted stated on the official European PlayStation Home Forum. "Open BETA will be later this year after 2.5 is released.

Sorry about that, I should know better than to say anything that could be misconstrued like that on such an important subject."
