Microsoft has no plans for Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive 50°
May 6, 2008 // 1:40 am - The company says it will not be using Sony technology in its "game console." To quote:

"As we have stated, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360," said a Microsoft official in an email to GamePro on Monday.

"Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."

The statement comes amid persistent reports that Microsoft will release a Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360 given the discontinuation of the console's now defunct HD DVD drive.

Blu-ray usage on the rise among PS3 owners, study concludes 50°
May 3, 2008 // 4:19 pm - Are you using your PS3 for Blu-ray movies? A new study shows that yes, in fact, you are. Blu-ray usage is on the rise amongst PS3 owners, according to Warner Home Video's research.

It seems that between the last quarter of 2007 and the end of February saw a usage increase of the PS3 as a Blu-ray player from 53% to 80%. In addition to this, after Sony's ad campaign pushing Blu-ray, disc sales rose from 10% to 15% between October and December of 2007.

Take it as you will, but the PS3 is definitely paving the road for Blu-ray and we hope you get more out of your system...

Another Manufacturer says XBox 360 Blu-ray coming this year! 50°
May 2, 2008 // 7:44 pm - A report from Taiwanese news source Economic Daily News says that Pegatron Technology (a recently formed subsidiary of Asus that shouldn't be confused with the Decepticon leader) has received an order from Microsoft to manufacture a Blu-ray equipped model of the Xbox 360.

According to the report, Pegatron says that it plans to begin production on the HD version of the Xbox 360 soon, with plans to ship within the next six months, aiming for a pre-holiday release.

It won't be the first time we've heard talk about Microsoft gloming on to the format, as the DigiTimes recently...

Blu-ray: The Future Has Been Delayed 50°
May 1, 2008 // 1:15 am - Hot on the heels of last week's report from ABI Research noting that many consumers may not see the picture quality difference between Blu-ray and standard DVDs comes the latest Blu-ray sales figures from NPD Group. And they're not pretty.

According to NPD, sales of Blu-ray standalone players plummeted 40 percent from January to February, then rose a scant 2 percent from February to March. The general consensus was that once Toshiba dropped its support for the HD DVD format early this year, sales would increase.

Paramount announces First Blu-ray Disc Titles 50°
April 30, 2008 // 3:20 pm - Paramount has announced that its first three Blu-ray titles will be released on May 20. They are "Face/Off," "Next," and "Bee Movie".

Paramount will then release "Cloverfield" and "There Will Be Blood" on June 3. The first day-and-date Blu-ray Disc release will be "The Spiderwick Chronicles." on June 24.

Lite-On DH-401S Blu-ray Drive follow-up! 50°
April 22, 2008 // 7:22 pm - A week ago we posted news that the Lite-On DH-401S can read Sony PS3 game discs!, and today I am adding a brief follow-up to that article.

I grabbed one of the drives last week and it arrived a few days ago, installed it into the PC, and can confirm Jan70's findings- that it indeed reads PS3 Game Discs flawlessly!
