Sony Unaware of Any Slow PlayStation 3 PSN Download Speeds 300°
September 15, 2008 // 10:22 pm - Gamers and journalists alike have complained about the slow download speeds on PSN. "I would say PSN is generally slower than other services, especially wireless," says Chris Morell, senior editor and PlayStation liaison at GamePro.

However, Sony's director of communications Patrick Seybold has responded by saying that he hasn't noticed this at all, and "I have both [a 360 and Wii] at home and downloads are comparable if not slightly quicker for PS3. Of course, that's just my experience."

To quote: Two weeks ago, it took a frustrating six hours to download...

At the Sony E3 2008 press conference, the company reiterated Home's importance to the platform and promised that it would release an open beta in the third quarter of 2008.

July 28, 2008 // 4:34 pm - A new PlayStation 3 console was approved by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission last week, according to the agency's online filings database.

No information on the new model, number CECHL01, is available at present from the filing because Sony was granted short-term confidentiality on the papers but it is likely the 80G-byte version announced earlier this month during the E3 games show in Los Angeles. The console is due on sale in the next couple of months and will replace the current 40G-byte model.

June 28, 2008 // 4:56 pm - The PlayStation 3 can be a significant contributor to your power bill, but Sony is reacting to recent criticism with a third-generation hardware version that we will be shipping this holiday season. According to media reports, the updated console will consume about 10 - 20% less power than current systems.

The transition to the new generation will mainly consist of a 65 nm shrink of the RSX GPU, which will join a 65 nm Cell processor. Combined with a new cooling architecture, which replaces copper heatpipes with smaller aluminum plates, the new PS3 is expected to consume only 100...

Sony exec: Ten-year lifespan for the 'PlayStation Networked' PSP 50°
June 26, 2008 // 1:05 am - In an interview, a Sony exec admitted the 'PlayStation Networked' PSP has "probably suffered" due to a high reliance on third-party content which is no longer appearing on the PSP as regularly as previous years."

"We need to revitalise the developer community to get behind PSP," said Zeno Cola├žo, VP of publisher and developer relations for Sony Europe.

"One of the issues when you rely on a business model that relies on 25 per cent games from Sony and 75 per cent from other publishers is that if they start to refocus, you can't recover that space because you don't...

Sony: PlayStation Network Down for Maintence Tomorrow 50°
June 24, 2008 // 12:31 am - According to the knowledge base article linked above on Sony's official PlayStation Web site, the PSN will be taken offline for scheduled maintenance tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m., until 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time. And yes, during this time, access to the online PS Store will be disabled as well.

Does this mean the elusive firmware 2.4 is due for release tomorrow? Despite what hopefuls may think, it's highly unlikely.

Though we wouldn't be surprised if Sony will be using the time to test out the key components of 2.4 before they go live, such as trophies, which are...
