Gran Turismo TV Revealed!

Gran Turismo TV Revealed! 50°
385w ago - By now you've already read our news on GT 5 Prologue Release Date and Free Demo. Just as we expected, more and more information the new Gran Turismo for PS3 is slowly leaving Sony HQ. We've learned even more about the upcoming downloadable demo, but more importantly, what will make it into the final game.

Sony's production team has been making the rounds at different automakers, that's nothing too earth-shaking, but the big news is that Gran Turismo 5 will finally inject some personality into the series. We confirmed that the team is hitting carmakers and interviewing key individuals at Ford, Audi, Nissan and other firms for on-camera footage. These interviews will be used in Gran Turismo 5 as bonus footage about the world of cars. Think of it like Special Features or Deleted Scenes you'd find in a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc. This is without-a-doubt, what Sony has been touting as Gran Turismo TV.

How do we know this? We caught 2007 Formula D Champion, Tanner Foust, being interviewed on-camera by a production crew with Gran Turismo 5, in HD, running in attract mode. It's a bit strange seeing the GT camp breaking out of its shell and diving into a more tuner-ish world, but we're positive that this isn't the last drifter Sony plans on interviewing. From the sounds of it, Sony is busy breaking out of the stale mold...

Sony talks up PS3 update

Sony talks up PS3 update 50°
385w ago - A Sony executive has left PS3 fans all a-quiver after promising to release a firmware update "soon" that will improve the console's support for Blu-ray Disc interactivity features.

Don Eklund, VP of advanced technologies at Sony, reportedly made the promise at the recent HDTV DisplaySearch conference in California. Unfortunately, he didn't say anything more specific about the release, leaving PS3 buffs to speculate about what new interactive features Sony might introduce to the console.

The Blu-ray Disc Association has already mandated that all Blu-ray players launched after 31 October must feature picture-in-picture video playback, so Sony could be prepping things to make sure any PS3s sold after that date are compliant.

Any Sony update will follow hot on the heels of an interactivity features update for HD DVDs, announced recently by Universal. Its release consisted mainly of online shopping features, such as merchandise or trailer downloads, and a function allowing users to share their favourite movie clips with friends directly from their player.

385w ago - High monthly TV bills could well be a thing of the past! Jalipo, the online web TV platform for premium content, has just announced details of a few more pay-per-minute live broadcasts offered to viewers through its (here we go) "unique and easy-to-use" micro-payment system. Shows include next month's Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler superfight at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, and Scotland versus Italy in the Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Well, Jalipo is testing the service's functionality via the PS3 this week. A contact informed SPOnG earlier today, that, "given that Sony uses a standard web browser, there should not be any major problems, and if we discover we have to tweak our code to make it compatible, we will schedule this in for the near term. The hi-def TV output is of course no issue whatsoever. In terms of costs per minute, the content owner sets the price according to the value they perceive it is worth and therefore all I can do it give you some examples."

SPOnG is yet to confirm with Jalipo if the high-definition output via a PS3 is at 'full' 1080p so-called 'proper' high definition, but we should have news on this shortly.

So, when we are talking pay-per-minute 'low cost' viewing for these types of events - how much exactly are we talking about?

Using a surge protector voids PS3 warranty?!

Using a surge protector voids PS3 warranty?! 50°
385w ago - According to Danjak on the official PS boards: So I woke up yesterday morning and saw that my PS3 was not on. You know that little light letting you know it's getting power? That morning, no light. This happened once before, but I was able to unplug it and plug it back in to get power, and then it worked. I tried that yesterday morning, but nada. Nothing would work... it was completely dead and not getting power.

So I call Sony and let them know that my less-than 4 month old PS3 was now a brick. I tried to tell the guy that the trouble started when I first tried to play Call of Duty 3 a while back - it would just completely shut off the system and the only way to get it back on was to unplug it and replug it back in. (an issue that's been well-documented now in threads such as these.)

The service representative didn't care about any of that. Instead, he starts asking me a bunch of questions to try and void my warranty. Things like, "I want you to check the sticker above the hard drive and tell me if it looks damaged." I'm like, "no, no, no" to everything he's asking. Then he asks me if I had a power surge recently. Again, I tell him no, that I have all my electronics protected with a high quality power surge protector. He then says "okay, great, Sony can fix it right up for you for $150." ...

Elves Are Out, Aliens In

Elves Are Out, Aliens In 50°
385w ago - Where have all the elves gone?

That's the question gamers and the people who love them are bound to ask this fall as they take in the latest crop of big-budget video games. Since the 1970s, dragons, orcs, wizards and dwarfs have been staples of interactive entertainment, yet this holiday season there are hardly any top new games in the traditional fantasy mode.

Instead 2007 has been dominated by perhaps the deepest lineup of science fiction games ever.
