PS3 Sales Stagnate; Nintendo DS, PSP, XBox 360, Wii All Going Up

PS3 Sales Stagnate; Nintendo DS, PSP, XBox 360, Wii All Going Up 50°
327w ago - The PlayStation 3 and PS2 were the only platforms that didn't receive a significant boost this week as the end-of-year climb finally begins.

The DS and PSP platforms are both up nearly 20k units, the 360 almost doubled last week's effort from 8k to 15.5k, and the Wii is up 10k units from the previous week.

Defying the weekly gains for every other platform, the PS3 sold only 17.4k units this week, exactly (for our purposes) what it sold last week. As we look for continued increases in hardware next week, will the PS3 be along for the ride?

Hardware:

- DS+ 107,423
- PSP 61,226
- Wii 35,298
- PS3 17,436
- 360 15,474
- PS2 5,281

Call of Duty: Five Years of Graphical Progression

Call of Duty: Five Years of Graphical Progression 50°
327w ago - With Call of Duty: World at War the all in all fifth title of the series has been released. Lets take a look behind the scenes of the CoD series that has dominated the sales charts since 2003.

The original and thus first part of Call of Duty was released in late 2003 and utilized an engine that once was the basis for an id Software shooter in 1999. But back then heavily modified code enabled up-to-date graphics in extensive outdoor levels and some pixel shading for improving water surfaces.

Call of Duty 2 hit the market about two years later. The distinctive features this time: Call of Duty 2 takes place in World War II and utilizes a self developed engine that massively used DX9 features to create the possibly most realistic visualization back in 2005. Even with today's standards the game is still looking very good.

Part 3 had been for the consoles exclusively and thus the transfer to modern battlefields came to the PC in November 2007. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare offered high-tech weapons, night vision sight and helicopters: The rest was, despite the graphics, still the same: Shooting and bombing with a squad. Visually the title is up-to-date, but can't outrun its predecessors in certain situations. Here the rule of marginal profit comes into effect: Every little bit of visual improvement...

The Top 10 NES Games of All Time

The Top 10 NES Games of All Time 400°
327w ago - Paste Magazine has created a 'Top 10 NES Games of All Time' list today.

To quote: The video games on this list kept me company through many an elementary-school sleepover at friends' houses, provided endless fodder for recess playground conversation and even inspired a few short stories from yours truly (each plot revolving around the fantasy of getting sucked inside a video game).

In honor of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, I dedicate this list and to Shigeru Miyamoto and all the other folks at Nintendo who made all that fun possible... oh, and of course my beloved aunt Jean who sent me and my siblings our first NES console.

10. Gradius [Konami] - 1986
Collecting the power-up pellets and pimping out your little spaceship provided the irresistible hook. Once you got three rows of lasers firing, your robotic foes stood little chance.

9. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse [Konami] - 1990
The Belmont clan had a frustrating existence with Dracula continually springing back to life after getting killed in the previous installment. Players, however, were more than happy to go vampire hunting again and again. The third installment pulled different playable characters into the mix and breathed new life into a popular young franchise.

Street Fighter HD Hits PlayStation Network - It's Finally Here

Street Fighter HD Hits PlayStation Network - It's Finally Here 300°
327w ago - Capcom's John Diamonon shared the following today via PS Blog:

Joe Esposito once eloquently proclaimed that "History repeats itself" and it's an honor for me to announce that Street Fighter returns today on the PlayStation Network. On a personal note, it's been a dream of mine to work on this franchise. I remember going to the local 7-11 and spending hours trying to pull off an invisible throw or handcuff glitch.

I remember sharing theories with my friends that it was possible to throw that rock in the Chun-Li stage, pull out Guile's gun, control Ryu's red fireballs or defeat the mysterious Sheng Long. Street Fighter was a cultural phenomenon not seen since the days of Pac Man. Here we are, almost 20 years later, and this franchise is as relevant as ever.

Here's the final HD Remix video for your viewing pleasure.

Enough of my reminiscing. I'm here to talk about the next installment of the SF2 series; Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix Special Champion Hyper Alpha EX Versus Zero Plus Collection Edition (am I missing anything?). Ah Capcom, we love long game titles. I can go on and on about the many features of this game, but instead, I'll provide you this link that contains all you need to know about HD Remix....

PS3 Challenge - MotorStorm: Pacific Rift - Can You Beat Us?

PS3 Challenge - MotorStorm: Pacific Rift - Can You Beat Us? 50°
327w ago - MotorStorm: Pacific Rift's Game Director Nigel Kershaw issued a challenge today for fans as follows:

So MotorStorm: Pacific Rift has been out a couple of weeks, and we're all back from our vacations, rested, refreshed and ready to give you a run for your money on the online leaderboards in Time Attack.

If you're not familiar with Time Attack in the MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, it's a game mode where you attempt to get the best lap time possible using one of the vehicle classes on one of the 16 racetracks in the game.

It's different than regular MotorStorm racing, as it's just you on the track with no opponents to worry about, and it's all about getting around the track in one piece. If you crash or manually reset the track during the course of a lap, then that time will not be uploaded to the online leaderboards.

There is a different board for each of the eight vehicle classes on each of the tracks, as well as an overall board for each track showing the very fastest times regardless of vehicle used.

Since launch we have had an embargo on members of staff posting to the Time Attack leaderboards, in order to give you guys a chance to get comfortable with the game.

Now that embargo has been lifted, and we'll be on there looking to give...
