Rumor: Sony to Unveil New PS3 XMB (XrossMediaBar) at E3 2010

Rumor: Sony to Unveil New PS3 XMB (XrossMediaBar) at E3 2010 550°
250w ago - As next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo slowly approaches the video game rumor mill rapidly increases, and the latest scoop includes the possibility that Sony may unveil a new PS3 XMB (XrossMediaBar) at E3 2010.

On the last episode of the CheapAssGamer podcast, CheapyD stated that he knows that Sony will show a PS3 XMB redesign at E3.

He doesn't delve into what changes will be implemented or if it'll have new features like cross-game chat, but it's certainly something forward to.

If true, they'll likely release the firmware the same night of the announcement.

To quote CheapyD: "I've heard that the Sony PS3 is getting a completely redesigned XrossMediaBar. Like totally new, not just like new columns and stuff like - totally redone."

Finally, below are some XMB redesign concept designs to compliment the previously released PSN Profile and Friend's List pictures.

PS3 TOOL DECR-1000A XMB (XrossMediaBar) Menu Video Tour

PS3 TOOL DECR-1000A XMB (XrossMediaBar) Menu Video Tour 800°
267w ago - This week, as promised previously, we decided to show a video tour of the PS3 TOOL DECR-1000A XMB (XrossMediaBar) menu.

For anyone with a retail PlayStation 3 system, the options listed below are quite different. But, for those with PS3 Test units, the Debug settings are quite similar to that of a PS3 TOOL.

However, the biggest difference between a TEST and a TOOL is that of the TOOL's Communication Processor. Unlike the TEST, which relies on the PS3 hardware itself to do the work, the TOOL uses its CP for independent hardware debugging.

Going back to a Retail system - the major difference between a Retail and a Debug unit are the Check features (when pressing triangle), which runs a check on the installed application - reporting file size, location, contents etc. Another notable difference is, under the System Options setting, the Debug Settings - which contains a large number of features, detailed below in part.

One other significant difference between Retail systems and Development Systems is...

Video: PS3 XMB Ideas, Sony Considers Changing the Friends List

Video: PS3 XMB Ideas, Sony Considers Changing the Friends List 550°
286w ago - Update: A second concept video has now been added below!

PlayStation 3 Firmware update 3.0 added large gray boxes (see the third picture below) around each individual user ID, making for a cluttered look that simply didn't jive with the elegance of the XMB.

SCEE's PS3 Brand Manager stated on the EU PlayStation.Blog that "updates to firmware don't always suit everyone's tastes."

Thankfully, the Friends list is something Sony is "looking into based on your comments." Mark Bowles added, "We really do appreciate the feedback you guys give us, both positive and negative."

That being said, YouTube user tubescorch has shared some of his own PlayStation 3 XMB ideas along with a video below.

To quote: "Since the recent firmware 3.0 update the PS3 XMB is taking a turn for the worse. Here a some ideas on how Sony could improve the XMB."

Project Ideas: Possibilities of the PlayStation 3 XMB Interface

Project Ideas: Possibilities of the PlayStation 3 XMB Interface 550°
297w ago - Recently SKFU shared some details on a PC / PS3 Messenger project in development, and over the weekend he has also theorized on some other untapped potential via the PS3's XMB (Cross Media Bar) interface.

To quote: The XMB is a nice core for a lot of features but why are they not unlocked yet? To mention a few examples:

Selfmade Widgets
The PS3 uses a widget engine based on open source for the information board. So why not give us the ability to load our own homebrew widget's from external mediums or install them like themes? As they mostly use XML and flash files it wouldn't even compromise PS3's security.

Music Visualizations
The PSP has a lot of them, the PS3 only three. Next-Gen multimedia entertainment? Not really, yet.

Universal Messenger
The PSP can use Skype, why not the PS3? The PS3's messaging system is based on Jabber. It would be very simple to allow the PS3 to communicate with iCQ, Google Talk and other instant messenger protocols.

Open File Transfer
Why can we only send pictures with size limitation via the PSN while we would more like to send music files or savegames. If that uses to much ressources like traffic,...

Cross Game Chat and Voice Messaging Coming to the PS3 XMB

Cross Game Chat and Voice Messaging Coming to the PS3 XMB 100°
310w ago - According to CydoniaX, both voice messaging and cross game chat are in development for the PS3 console.

To quote, via PS Blog: When are we getting game launching abilities for every multiplayer game in the PS3 library? Why is it that the most basic of features for both the XMB and HOME get prioritized and delivered before all the extra stuff?

1) XMB - Voice Chat across games
2) XMB - Voice messaging(30 sec clip)
3) HOME - Game Launching for all games

Deliver what the fans want first and foremost then surprise us with all this Xi stuff.

CydoniaX replies: All that stuff is still in development, game launching started with Warhawk and should be supported by all future game spaces now. It takes time, but we haven't forgotten about all the stuff that our users really want!
