PS3 owners: Does the code 80010514 mean anything to you?

PS3 owners: Does the code 80010514 mean anything to you? 250°
360w ago - The Xbox 360's RROD has been the monkey on Microsoft's back for the past couple of years, but according to some reports, Sony has been dealing with some similar problems with the PS3 as well.

Complaints on Sony's own forums show a small percentage of users being greeted with 80010514 errors, and finding out that their Blu-ray drives are no longer functioning. A quick search via the information superhighway seems to indicate that Sony has not released an official breakdown of the code, but that it veritably indicates an issue with the Blu-ray drive.

To be fair, it has to be mentioned that isolated reports of this error have been around for quite some time -- since the PS3's launch, in fact -- and that we've heard nothing about it coming anywhere near Xbox 360 levels of concern. However, it should be known that at least a couple people on staff know of others who have had issues with their PS3's giving up the ghost.

Since I've taken a liking to my own, and I'm aware of a few of you owning the hardware yourself, I just have to ask: Do you know of anyone personally whose had their PS3 go on the fritz? Inquiring minds want to know.

Something new on the PS3 Settings menu coming soon?

Something new on the PS3 Settings menu coming soon? 400°
360w ago - Don't ask how, but I noticed something different in this picture below.

What's that new icon above 'Game Settings' but underneath 'System Update'?

It looks very similar to the message box icon so could it be 'RSS Feeds Settings' or 'Email Settings'?

Hopefully we will find out in 2.30 coming out next Thursday!

Additional Refinements Coming To PS3 Gran Turismo 5

Additional Refinements Coming To PS3 Gran Turismo 5 50°
360w ago - Gran Turismo 5: Prologue is probably the best looking racing game to ever hit a console. If you squint your eyes just a little, it really does look like you're watching real video on your PS3.

But when the full fledged GT5 finally hits PlayStation 3, it looks like the graphics may be even better than what we're seeing with Prologue.

"In terms of quality we've been able to establish a benchmark in this version, but I think with GT5 there will be additional refinements, perhaps to the lighting and maybe the weather... weather effects," Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi told Videogamer.com.

Yamauchi says that it'll be about a decade until we'll be at the point where games look exactly like CG in the movies.

"Real-time computer graphics are about 10 years behind non-real-time computer graphics like you see in movies," he explained. "I think that gap is what we'll be trying to fill in the years to come."

MGS4 details from EDGE: This will blow you away!

MGS4 details from EDGE: This will blow you away! 200°
360w ago - MGO is included with MGS4, but it will be the bare bones to be added to and upgraded in time. The opening credits (of MGS4) were designed by Logan, the people that did the hugely successful ipod ads.

The story visits more locations and embraces more styles than any MGS to date. A 'virtual range' will be included from the main menu. Here you can test the huge amount of weapons in MGS4 as well as the various advanced CQC techniques in the game.

The game will feature various details to play around with such as highly detailed and fashionable consumer gadgets. MGS4 has been 4 years in development.

There will be one hell of a big bang of a final to the game. Not a whimper. This will blow you away. Snake is a slave to injections that keep him alive.

The sneaking play of the originals with it's air ducts and cameras has now become a fast pace living battlefield of traps and innovations. The control system is 'revised and improved'

The Gekkou (the mechs with organic legs that make mooing sounds) will work in packs to hunt you down. They can sense past your optic camo if they think something is amiss.

Snake will have two new energy bars that makes Snakes advanced age impossible to ignore:

Stress: This rises in response to fight conditions. This...

Future PS3 Firmware to Support Managed Copy

Future PS3 Firmware to Support Managed Copy 400°
360w ago - We know that a future PlayStation 3 firmware update will enable Portable Copy, a feature that will allow users to copy a downsampled version of certain Blu-ray titles over to their PSP for portable viewing.

But in a recent interview with Japanese site Impress Watch, Sony engineers revealed that an upcoming firmware update will also bring support for Managed Copy.

With Managed Copy, PS3 owners will be able to pop-in a Blu-ray disc and legally rip it straight to their PS3's hard drive. Additionally, future updates are expected to bring 1080 deinterlacing and DTS-HD MA support to the console. A release window for the new features was not given.

On the subject of Firmware 2.20, one of the engineers said that the forthcoming update will greatly reduce system memory usage.

Without a doubt, this is great news for developers and likely means that Sony is paving the way for in-game XMB.
